I'd never heard of Books By Mail. How do you know the selection? Is it kind of like having a Netflix queue? Even if the selection is meager though, it seems like a pretty nifty program. :)
I'm pretty sure I'll like them. What I've seen of Bollywood seems to mesh well with my personality. Also, I trust your brilliance. Do you have more to add to your rec list (this one? any others?)?
Yeah. In order to appreciate Bollywood, you must like musicals and must be able to indulge in the cheesiness and melodrama (At the same time though, I feel that even with these elements, BW films are often more sincere than typical HW. Huh.) I can see you appreciating at least some of it. :) And my dear, why do you keep mistaking my insanity for brilliance? Haha.
Recs:
-If your in the mood for beautiful cinematography and a touching story that's slightly tragic, Veer-Zaara. (Y was bored with it, but it's one of my favorites. So who knows what you will think?)
-I'm not a huge fan of the love story, but for some reason, I think you would like Dil Se. It is not typical Bollywood in the least, and it has some wonderful shots of India. The music and choreography of two songs in particular are amazing...
-For Bollywood in all its cheesy, opulent glory (as well as one of the most beloved pairs in BW and a pairing I also adore), I suggest Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham. Both are written by the same man who did Kal Ho Naa Ho and KKHH is a close contender for my favorite!
-For lighthearted fluff, Jab We Met, Main Hoon Na, Hum Tum, and Salaam Namaste are great fun. (And only MHN features Shahrukh Khan if you want a break from his films, heh.)
-Finally, I think you would love Paheli. It's based on Indian folklore and is about a ghost who falls in love with a new bride... Do I need to go on or are you already sold? ;)
Aaand that's pretty much all of the Hindi movies I've seen so far! Maybe I'll become more critical once I've been watching them longer? In any case, from the forums I've read, a lot of people recommend Kal Ho Naa Ho, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, and Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge as good movies for beginners.
Err, sorry for rambling on so much about it! :X

Books By Mail is something I'm sure a lot of libraries do. Mine is run through the Maine State Library-- if someone qualifies (which my mother does, being disabled and a non-driver), then they have access to all the books/movies/etc. available in the libraries that have joined. You order them on the computer, and when they're free, they show up at your house. Sometimes I'm shocked to discover that none of the available libraries own some of what I consider to be very basic titles, but it still provides me with some quality reading material.
Love of musicals? Check. Love of cheese? Check. Love of new perspectives? Check. I think I will enjoy this. I'm planning on my next Netflix being a BW, and now I have a delightfully long list of recs! Thank you! :) I love it when you "ramble" about things you love-- it's fun!

Interesting! I wonder if Texas offers that...
I love receiving stuff in the mail (that's why I've been addicted to buying things of amazon and ebay and doing netflix), so I'd love that. Can you request they add titles when they're missing something?
Hee! I hope you enjoy it! I could always use someone else to squee about it with! Let me know what you think when you see one, will you? Oh, and add OM SHANTI OM to your list! It's one huge parody of Bollywood and BW actors, so it's supposedly wittier when you understand more of the references, but I still ♥ it like crazy right now. I mean, the man wrestles with a stuffed animal tiger... Great stuff. I think you'd like it. ^_^
Well you're always recommending so many great things to me (albeit I'm far behind on actually watching them) that it's about time I share, right?! ;)
