Yesterday was sooooo nice. Schoolwork has really been stressing me out lately--tons of papers, some test I have to take and pass within this month in order to stay in the education program next semester, school observation hours across town, blargh, anyway--that I decided just to chill, do nothing of any importance, and watched KKHH (which has been sitting on my desk for a week taunting me!) instead. If only every day could be like that!

Kuch Kuch Hota Hai: ♥♥ Fun, cheesy, sappy, sweet, colorful, lovable characters, so very 90ish vibe...♥. No better way to spend the afternoon/evening than to waste it on a three hour Bollywood movie and then a couple of more hours re-watching favorite scenes, heh. But seriously, Karan Johar? He knows how to make damn good movies, yaar. (I need to get my hands on K3G and KANK ASAP!) And SRK and Kajol? So very lovely together. I loved the little girl playing the daughter Anjali and her meddling in Rahul's love life. So cute. And I thought I'd hate Rani's character, but I just couldn't. I'm incoherent with love right now. :P The only downside of this movie is that, though I liked the title song okay, none of the songs stuck with me like they have in all other BW movies I've seen so far. Still, this is another one I must own.
Gazebo. Rain. SRK & Kajol. I sighed during that whole scene.

And one of my favorite parts of the movie is when Rahul's daughter starts her matchmaking...

Too. Freaking. Cute. For. Words.
-Whenever I splurge on movies, I'm definitely nabbing
Veer-Zaara and
Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge as well.
DDLJ ("The Brave of Heart Will Take The Bride") was such an epic love story (I can see why it's one of India's favorites, if not the most beloved BW movie ever), and I'll admit that I have a weak spot for bickering couples who fall in love. It reminded me a little bit of the 80s flick The Sure Thing with John Cusack, with SRK as the pesky infatuated manchild and Kajol as the bookish, prudent love insterest, but obviously DDLJ was on a much more dramatic scale and had lots of dancing and singing. I also kind of like the extra chub on SRK, no idea why.
This drunken music number is teh cute. Basically, Simran drinks from Raj's flask to stay warm and then drives Raj crazy as she tramps around a European town while intoxicated.

This screencap is from probably one of my favorite scenes, but the whole movie is made of win and had me giggling in parts (like when Raj tried to buy beer from Simran's father, the whole Paris Party scene, when the two are visiting a church in Europe, when Raj and Simran break their fast, the reunion scene in the field of course, etc.)...
She likes me! She really likes me! ♥Raj.
-Veer-Zaara was also epic, but a 100x more heartbreaking. This movie played my heartstrings like a solo violist playing the most depressing piece of music in the world (I don't know what that musical piece is, and besides, my analogies never make much sense. :P). How many times did Veer restrain his emotions and the truth to protect Zaara (at the train station, when the Pakistani police first captured him, all those years in prison and throughout his trial)? That's devotion, people. I love the older couple (Veer's aunt and uncle) just as much as the movie's OTP, and Rani had a wonderful role as one of her country's first woman lawyers whose first case was Veer's.
I adore SRK and Preity together (though I have yet to see either actor paired with someone I didn't like), and I wonder if the two of them will ever do a movie together in which their love isn't so tragic. Kal Ho Naa Ho, Veer-Zaara, and Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna? Yeah, their love is just doomed, I guess.
I've had this song stuck in my head for days. I wish I could find the English subs--Veer's an apparition and he's saying "I'm here, I'm here, I'm here, here" despite the obstacles and distance. *siiiiigh* And when he undresses/dresses her? GAH. To think actresses get paid to make these scenes!

Aww, it's time for Lodi! And yay, this one is subtitled!

And this clip has arguably the best and most romantic moment of the film, and not just because it has a very wet Shahrukh (although he always looks good in rain scenes. Gazebo scene of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, anyone?). He wants Zaara desperately, he even gives up his dream job to go to her, but he shows restraint at this moment because he's leaving it for her to decide their fate. Beautiful.

Jab We Met was my first venture outside of familiar Bollywood actors, and it was a deliciously fun movie. It isn't the most impressionable movie I've seen, but it's funny, cute, modern, and the songs are quite catchy. Shahid and Kareena bounced perfectly off each other; I loved how in the first half of the film, Aditya's character is quiet and mopey while Geet is a chatty Pollyanna, and then as Geet rubs off on him and as Geet goes through some troubling times, their personalities almost switch. I also feel less pervy crushing on Shahid than SRK and even Saif because he's much closer to my age and with his youthful face, looks even closer, heh.
The last two minutes of this clip (English subs FTW!) are from one of my favorite scenes of the movie. Aditya and Geet are low on cash and desperate for a place to stay until the next train passes through, but the hotel clerk mistakes Geet as a prostitute and Geet naively "confirms" it. Shahid's expression, lol.

Salaam Namaste was one of the first on my list to see because I was excited to find out Preity and Saif had done another movie together. Whereas SRK and Preity are tragic together, Saif and Preity are adorable with a side serving of angst. I cannot tell you how much it amuses me that this is not the first time Saif has knocked up Preity in a movie (and then wants her to have an abortion), lol. It was a little too lengthy than necessary and the story wasn't the best, but, I liked how it was a couple dealing with their different personalities and their relationship issues after they get together, and, as I said, it had Saif and Preity...plus a gorgeous Australian background.
In this scene, Nick is driving her around in the middle of the night because of a craving for Dutch dark chocolate ice cream. Lol, I hear ya honey! Love the pajamas too. :)

Hum Tum, which I watched for Saif and because my friend told me it was good, was the first movie I've seen of Rani's. Does she always play smart, level-headed characters? Not that I'm complaining--I loved her in this, and her and Saif have great chemistry. Karan's cartoons woven throughout the movie were ridiculously cute.
The title song is probably my favorite, but I ♥ these scenes about boys vs. girls. If the slap is any indication, Rhea won. :) (Have I mentioned how happy I am when people put up clips with English subs? 'Cause I am.)

Finally,
Dil Chahta Hai, which was actually the first Bolly film I saw after Kal Ho Naa Ho. I've heard that this one is a favorite of a lot of BW fans, but...it didn't do much for me. I enjoyed the friendship between the three guys, and Saif was such a cutie, but...I wanted to flash-forward all of one of the guy's (namely the character Siddharth's) scenes. Really, who made this movie enjoyable was Aamir Khan. His character was full of snark, and Aamir has great screen presence--it's probably safe to say that he's another one I'd develop a bit of a crush on once I see more of his films. I so want to see Lagaan, Fanaa (Kajol! ♥) and Taare Zameen Par.
Preity tries to explain love to Aamir, hee:

Kal Ho Naa Ho is still my favorite Bollywood film--though DDLJ, Veer-Zaara, and probably KKHH are close. Is it a coincidence that Shahrukh is in all of these? Not in the least! His charisma is such that when he is on the screen, nothing else might as well be going on in the world. *hopelessly fangirls* As for Hindi actresses...of the leading ladies I've seen (Preity, Kajol, Rani, and Kareena), I really can't decide! They're all so lovely. :)
Bollywood, I heart you so much. Please to be continuing with the entertainment, kthnx. Up next: Dil Se, Paheli, and Om Shanti Om (aka my quest to see everything with Shahrukh Khan in it). My library has a huge selection, which is probably because this area has a large Indian community, but I may just cave into Netflix for the accessibility of Hindi movies.
p.s. Apologies for the length of this post and for the rabid abuse of the ♥ symbol. I can't help it--these movies just make me ♥-y, I suppose. :P
