So I am officially a fucking moron. This evening I recieved an email about a 'possible security breach' in my bank account. I wasn't really thinking clearly, and I have had some weird issues with my bank account recently, so I freaked out and thought it was real. The email was fairly professional looking* and had a link that appeared to go to Washington Mutual's site. I went to the site, and the thing that really confuses me here is that the address in the address bar was that of their actual site, and everything on the site looked exactly as it should have. They said that in order to access my account online I would have to confirm my information. Not thinking of course I did. About 10 minutes later I was telling a friend about it and she kind of laughed and said 'heh, so you didn't give them your information did you? because you know it was a hoax right?'
And then this sinking feeling just hit me really hard and I realized I was now one of those type of people I love to make fun of for falling for ridiculous online scams. Fuck fuck fuck. My friend was nice enough to drive me to the bank, where I sheepishly told the teller what had happened, and he nodded knowingly and sighed 'Ahhh yes the infamous hoax emails'. We closed my accounts and straightened things out but god damn do I feel stupid.
Moral of the story: no matter how savvy you think you are, watch the fuck out.
* Actually when I examined the email later I realized that a word in the FIRST LINE had been grossly mispelled: 'Dear Costomer'. Dammit I am stupid.
