last saturday my co-worker and i watch one of the kids at our programs struggle to complete simple tasks that a seven year old should have mastered (it's a craft program at the community center for seven-twelve year olds) and wondered how old this boy really was. my co-worker ended up having a small converstation with this participant to dig up some details...
co-worker: william, how old are you?
little william: *covers his mouth with his head and just stares at my co-worker*
co-worker: come here william, tell me how old are you.
little william: *moves hand from mouth* ugh, i don't know *then covers mouth again immediately*
co-worker: hmmm, are you 7? 8? 9? 10?
little william: *moves hand from mouth and spakes in a small quite voice* seven.
co-worker: william, when's your birthday?
little william: i don't know *covers mouth again*
co-worker: is it january? february? march? april? may?
little william: april
co-worker: hmmm. is it april 1st?
little william: *small nod*
co-worker: so tell me what grade are you in? are you grade 1? 2?
little william: *whispers* i don't know *covers mouth immediately again*
co-worker: okay, you can go work on your craft now.
it's quite obvious he was lying since he covered his mouth the whole time and didn't know what to say when he was asked his age, birthday and grade. *haha* children know these things! it's especially obvious when you tell your child to tell them it was their birthday the day the program started! *hahaha* funny how parents would go to the extent of teaching their children to lie so that they will be able to join the program, especially because it is a FREE program. *hahaha* oh dear! talk about milking the government's money. *hahaha*
