Okay, I know I promised you guys a post on the topic of "queer" as a term in fandom. And yet, I don't think I can do it anymore. At least, not for another few weeks.
Why? Well, I'm just feeling remarkably burned out when it comes to the issue and LJ.
It seems that queer-wank has been over-flowing on the good ole el-jay as of late, unfortunately. And since I'm not one who tends to sit and hold my tongue, I admittedly jumped into a fray or two.
The first arguement was over who can, and who cannot, bandy about the term 'queer.' While this wank is still going on, I managed to say my piece, argue my share, and step out of it fairly early on. Which freed up some time for me to spend on the other recent issues.
These consisted of slash writers believing that the sheer act of writing a slash fic means that otherwise straight individuals are queer, and even more persecuted than people who identify as queer independent of their slasher status.
They also included the "is slash automatically queer" debate, and the concept that "queer cred" is something that is so important to a slasher that they should lie, cheat, and steal to get it.
By the time I got around to getting annoyed at the flocks of fangirls in Twilight fandom who insist on using "gay"/"homo"/"fairy"/"twink"/etc as slurs for a straight actor that was cast in a roll they don't think he fits, I just got that horrible ache in the back of my neck that acts up whenever I feel like I'm combatting unending stupidity.
Once the e-chatting is done, I then get to mention the cherry on top of my idiot sundae. My bus driver has decided that they should have loud anti-gay rants with another rider on a regular basis. Blech.
((Yes, I could theoretically buy a car, but I'd prefer to fuel my money into the websites for my serials, and art supplies for my wife. ^^;; And no, I can't report her for using offensive language, since homophobia isn't just something the state's indifferent about, it's actually written into our state laws as an acceptable act. We have anti-gay union laws here, and no protection for hate crimes. Fun stuff that my wife's newly formed art-colled GSA is hoping to take on.))
So while I'd love to come up with some new angle that I could desperately hope might reach a few more people than any of the other wanks have, I think I'd just prefer to take some time and try to de-stress from the whole situation.
Though I might post a list of some of my favorite online queer media soon. Most of my regular readers know what I like, but re-listing recs can never hurt. ^^
While I'm posting, I thought I'd mention that my thanks goes out to all of you who have left comments/reviews on Servants of the Mists and it's PU listing. Wow -- looking at the abbreviation for Pages Unbound, I'm beginning to remember why I typically prefer to just write the site's name out in full.
