Hank entered the Bar, limping, bedraggled, several small scars on his matted fur. He looked dirty, unkempt, and as if, rightly, he had been living in the woods, which was fitting, as he had very nearly been doing so. Such chaos and darkness had descended on his life that he was tired and overwrought, and most of his time diverted between deep depression and rages. In order to protect those he cared about, in order to keep others from getting hurt, he had retreated to the woods, killing demon bunnies and tearing up deadfalls. He had set himself too, and made a small hut, not more than a lean-to, and stayed there for the last few weeks, coming to the bar rarely.
Everything had added up. Catherine leaving with Lindsey and never coming back, his people on the brink of destruction, his life and friends falling apart and fighting each other, and dying... it was too much. Too much for one man to deal with. Maybe he should be stronger, but Dammit! He was only human.
So he stayed away from everyone.
But today, in the middle of a dark depression, something, something odd and low, and strange had started calling to him. Something that called him from the woods to the Bar. Something that sounded like magic and promises and darkness and danger and hope, all at once. Something, that, no matter how hard he tried, he couldn't resist. He growled, unwittingly aloud, as he strode into the main area of the Bar. And a red tinge danced across his eyes.
Billy, downstairs to grab some food, sees Hank and stops short. His eyes go wide and then he hurries over.
"Doc? Doctor McCoy? What happened?"
He scans his friend and mentor with all of his senses, trying to figure out the problem. Maybe Sam or Janet could help!
Hank freezes and sighs as he hears his name called. He turns and forces a smile as he sees Billy.
"You've grown."
The idiosyncrasy pops out and makes him almost chuckle, but his anger rises again.
"I have to go."
Billy blinks. That red glow in Hank's eyes doesn't feel right, not at all.
"Go where?"
He looks at his friend worriedly.
"Are you okay?"
Foolish words maybe, but...
Hank shakes his head.
"Not really, Billy, but I will be fine."
Liar!, his brain accuses. He ignores it. he glances around, listening for that voice, that weird calling he had felt. The red glow in his eyes slowly gets stronger
Billy watches him for a minute then shakes his head.
"Doc... are you sure? You really seem kind out there right now., and you look like hell..."
Hank shakes his head in irritation, eyes beginning to glow in time with his heartbeat, a sickly red.
"I said I am fine, Billy. I will talk with you later!"
He strides away.
Billy watches for a moment, shocked, but this is not right and he lurches into motion.
"Doc! Hey! What is going on?"
He goes after the man.
Hank almost growls, but he can feel the sensation reaching out for him, darkness and light. He doesn't pay any attention to Billy as he almost stalks forward, trying to find it, feel it. He wishes he had some of his instruments but they are either in the Infirmary or at home and he cant take the time right now. He wont. His mind is whirling in chaos and pain and he keeps moving.
Billy chases him and catches at his arm, unwisely maybe, but wanting to stop him for a minute. Something was wrong... very wrong.
"Doc? Hank? Just stop, please. Just stop for a minute. Something is wrong here..."
The irritation and anger poke and prod and shove deeper into his mind like a living thing, becoming too much for Hank and he roars as he whirls on his erstwhile student and glares. His eyes glow with an intense red light as he bites his words out.
"Leave me alone!"
As he moves, he catches sight of something., red light seems to flicker around the door and he hurries forward, Billy forgotten/.
Billy falls back, startled by the man's ferocity and anger, and by that light, a definitely not right light. He stares for a long moment, unsure what to do.
And then he sees the red light on the door as well, and his eyes go wide as he follows Doctor McCoy. He begins to call up his spells that he can remember, and wishes, right now, he had some back up. He scans the bar, but it is all strangers right now and he shakes his head. No time!
Hank moves close to the door, slowly using all his senses to try and figure out what is wrong. Suddenly the light flares and the Door opens, and he sees something, reaching out. For a moment, his mind is clear, and fear hits him. He scrambles back, but is too slow.
"Billy! Run!"
He feels a weight hit him, and then the light yanks him inward.
Billy leaps forward as he sees the light flare. The door opens wider and he feels himself yanked in by something. His last thought is a cry that rings outward.
Cassie!
And then they are both gone, the door is shut, and all is normal in Milliways once more. As normal as Milliways gets, anyway.
(And in their room, Cassie sits bolt upright, and stares at the wall... as her connection to Billy strains, and doesn't quite snap. She feels his fear and his worry and her eyes go wide. "Billy...")
