I rescued a cat from euthanasia this morning and brought him home. Nina is so unused to being aggressive around other cats, she doesn't even know which way to hiss right now. It's pretty fuckin' hysterical... the male, I'm calling him "Elbee" for "Little Boy Cat," is token hissing back at her and myewing like he did in the cat carrier. I think, for right now, there's only going to be the growling and hissing. She's only had me the last 4 years, and she hasn't been around another cat since then. I think things will level off as time passes. I doubt Nina has a truly aggressive bone in her body... but she hasn't shared her space with another cat in who knows when.
Anyway... back to work. Elbee is probably headed off to the next link in the fostering chain sometime tonight after I get more of my lease caught up. Ah, the fun of mixing work and pleasure.
EDIT: expounding on this a little.
I got back home around 2. I had until 5 pm to make my extra money on my lease so I could keep on running for another 24 hours. To put it mildly, I have no doubt that I got me some karma cookies today. Literally, I sat out in front of the hotel nearest where I lived in the hopes of taking ANYONE ANYWHERE, and they all got into their personal cars or rental cars and sped off. I didn't make a freakin' DIME.
I went into the licensee department with my 65 bucks from Saturday that I wasn't able to give them and I was told to have another 80 by 5 pm. I leave Yellow at 8:30, go pick Elbee up and take him back to my place (see above). Then, from 10-1, I go make 120 bucks. Enough for the lease extension, lunch and to put some gas back in the gas tank. And, it wasn't one of those back to back miracle runs... it was just one of those steady streams of work periods where someone was constantly in the back of the cab.
So, I get back home and Nina has effectively chased Elbee upstairs. He's whining about not having had anything to eat since I brought him home. I've already yelled at Nina once about standing between him and the food and I escort him downstairs. She hides under the big rocking chair and growls with the occasional hiss while he goes and eats. She's still friendly with me, but this whole situation is unnerving for her.
I have no doubt that if I end up getting Elbee as my own cat, the two of them will eventually become better acquainted than Nina did with her former feline roomie. Gabby was an interesting cat, but had her own issues which bubbled to the surface every time her new usurper came within hissing distance. They could very well be playing with each other by the end of next week.... but it's probably not meant to be. He's going to be a dandy edition to someone's house. He plays with cloth mice, offers himself up for belly rubs and has a very soft, dare I say soothing, voice.
Frankly, I'm just glad we got him off the chopping block.
