Ch. 9 - You only wish you could be like Jack of Fables

[Voice]

All the kids were packed at the beach yesterday. I took a stroll through there, just to be reminded that over half this place is under the age of seventeen. What a pain.

[Having spent a few centuries in a town full of immortals, teenagers and children were a pretty rare sight, save for those stuck at that age like Pinocchio and Ozma. So ( Read more... )

[Weight set means Item Shop means 'Hello, Jack, I hope you like a little Bad Religion in the air' as that is Rogue's pick of the day.

She's at the counter reading, having already finished the daily sort. She glances up when the bell chimes and nods.]

[He gives her a smirk, because even if she's a bit young for him, she won't always be. But as he navigates his way through, he finds some exercise equipment. Imagine his disappointment to realize how easily he's able to lift two hundred pounds of weight with one arm. Well damn. That's not going to work.]

[She'd be impressed, if such things weren't fairly common place where she's from. She does note it, however.

...and glances down at her book. Finishes the page and sticks in a placeholder.]

Lookin' for some resistance training?

[He glances over to her, then drops the weights down to the ground with a thud.]

I thought about it. Looks like you guys don't have anything my size.

Yeah, well they're a little too big for me, so if you don't mind...

[...putting them back where they go would be great.]

Oh. Right.

[He'll kneel down to start replacing it where they go.]

I don't know my own strength.

[Amused scoff:] I've heard that before.

[And in light of him putting them back decently enough, she'll offer a suggestion.]

Ya can always try the Battle Dome. Hike the gravity up until it take effort to stand and then do your thing.

[Or you can be like her and do a routine on the uneven bars. It had been annoying before, because she'd needed to program in combatants even in that simple a program and so she felt that she couldn't hike up the gravity to where it was necessary... but now it's one of her favorite ways to work out.]

[Eventually he's going to get annoyed at everyone suggesting he go do this sparring and fighting thing. At least the gravity thing sounds promising.]

Hike the gravity up? [He didn't even know that was a thing.]

[She nods.] Just enough so that you feel it pushing down on you when ya go in. Then you can do a regular cardio routine but it works to strengthen your muscles too.

[Eyeing the weights and then said more dryly.] Not that it looks like ya need too much help there.

Strength? Yeah, I've got that. Muscles aren't the problem.

[No, it's this flab he's growing on his gut. And it bothers him more than it would most people.]

[...huh. That's weird.]

So then what are you trying to do?

Work off a little flab. [Which is. Well. Weird. He's never had flab.]

[Eyebrow.]

Start eating salads. [Shrug] Or you could always take on a job.

Tried that, kiddo. The bar won't hire me.

[It's a long running conspiracy against Masa characters.]

[Kiddo? My Gawd, what kind of horrible conspiracy is this.

Oh well, she guesses it was better than the first time they met with him trying to get her name.

Snort.]

The bar isn't exactly the kinda place you want to work if you're looking to burn some calories. Try the smithy, or one of the farms outside of town.

[Well, the farms are a possibility, but the smithy sounds interesting too.]

The smithy, huh? Last time I was there, it was a bunch of kids running around.
