The receiver thrust into the cradle with a metallic crunch, Rupert winced slightly. Tara had gone upstairs, and he didn't want to alert her to both the new situation at hand and his sudden change of mood.

No denial. No depression. Just anger. Pure and unadulterated.

Jason Cain wanted the key to opening the fifth gate.

Which meant he wanted Ethan Rayne. The one plus, Rupert assured himself, was that Jason wasn't aware it was Ethan. He was trying to barter.

Ana Pendleton's plane was awaiting the group at a private strip. Taking it would strand the others. If he didn't play this exactly right...

No, Rupert reasoned, best to fly commercially. Give them a chance to succeed should he fail.

Right, he reasoned internally. Time to call in my last remaining chip.

Grabbing his keys, Rupert slipped out the door to his flat, jumped into his car and ignored all speed limits and stop signs as he drove out to grab Ethan.
