July 2008 - Title: "The Apology"
Griogair knew that he should not have woken up. Even before he had found Evelia, there had been enough blood staining the man's clothes that only a fool would believe his wounds were not mortal, even without the evidence of the knife- and sword-sized rents in his tunic. When he had felt his body give up, the moment after he had seen the light fade from his beloved's eyes, Griogair Colville had known that it was to be his last moment of life.
And then he woke.
It was morning. Mist fought with smoke to cover what was left of his estate, which was little more than blackened ruins by that hour. The fire had run its course, stopped by the morning chill. Griogair felt cold-- cold down to the marrow of his bones, but still he rose from the ground, only to fall to his knees again, weeping, when he found her.
Another fire flickered to life, small but bright, burning away the mist. Griogair consigned the body of his love to the flames, knowing that her soul was away from pain and at rest.
He gathered what he could of his belongings and took one last look at the smoldering pyre.
"I'm sorry, my love," he whispered. "I'm sorry I could not join you. But I swear-- if there is a way, I will find you again."
Griogair turned and walked, away from the village and into the distance.
