The music switched to a waltz once again, and Lady Evangeline found herself trying her best to avoid Gregor de Coleuille. It wasn't that she did not enjoy the stranger's company - it was because she rather did, and that was the trouble. Their little game of chess had turned out quite interesting, and once His Majesty had announced that a ball was to be held, the rumours spread quickly that de Coleuille would prolong his stay.
Evangeline de Sainte Clare simply knew that she did not trust herself to be alone with that man once again. He was far too witty and intriguing for a man without a title. She could imagine phantom hands touching her brazenly on the dance floor while others looked on and she knew, in her heart, that she would not have cared one whit.
"Lady, do you require anything?" Brianna, her waiting-woman, inquired.
"Non," she whispered, taking her fan out in an attempt to cool both her desires and the flush in her cheeks.
Brianna nodded once, curtsied, and left as Lady Evangeline surveyed the dance floor. A strong hand on her arm filled her with shivers, but her eyes remained forward. If she spared a glance at him, she knew it would be over.
"Are you so afraid of needing someone, mademoiselle? A lesson in the basics of waltz, your exact words, and yet I find myself without a partner."
Her hand moved to cover his slowly, and then pushed it off her arm gently until he could hold it out to his side. Closing her fan, Lady Evangeline extended her own arm so that he could escort her to the dance floor.
All eyes were upon the pair.
"I did indeed say that, monsieur. Forgive my manners. Shall we?"
She steadied her heart, not knowing that this was not the first time he would romance her, nor the last as the music continued.
