What professions did you consider before choosing the one that you did?
There were so many things that I wanted to be when I grew up. The first thing that I remember wanting to be was a veterinarian. What could be more fun for a young girl than to be surrounded my animals and for me be a doctor. Looking back now, I see that all of the things I wanted to be involved medicine in some way. Well, except for that brief time I wanted to be a ballerina. That died a quick death when I realized a) I had to practice ballet for hours instead of being outside playing with my friends. And b) I had to dance in front of strangers … on a stage. Yeah that dream didn't last long.
I've always been fascinated with the medical field. My mother's a nurse and I used to sit and watch her get ready. The uniform was like dress up for me. Mom got to play dress up every day, how cool is that? It wasn't until I was older that I realized exactly what she did and I was still fascinated.
My dream of being a veterinarian died a slow death when I learned I couldn't stand to see animals in pain. That kind of ruled out that profession. It didn't stop me though. I just changed my patients from four legs to two. From the time I was thirteen years old I wanted to be a doctor. That ambition didn't leave me until I was in college and we had a forensic anthropologist talk to us.
Have you ever had a moment where everything clicked into place for you? That's how it was when I listened to them talk. Suddenly I knew what I wanted to do and the first time I walked into a lab to examine a body, I felt like I was coming 'home'. I can't really explain it.
My dad once told me, that he didn't care what I did as a career. I could be anything I wanted to be, but to find something that you loved so much that you would pay them to do. Forensic Anthropology is that for me.
