Little Wonders by Rob Thomas

our lives are made
in these small hours
these little wonders,
these twists & turns of fate
time falls away,
but these small hours,
these small hours still remain

Fingers of sunlight dappled the room as the soft clicking of Bishop's nails on the wood floors brought Meghan out of her sleep. Her eyelids rose and a bleary eyed smile teased the edges of her lips. "Morning, furface." The words were still husky with sleep as she reached out and slid her fingers through the thick fur at his neck.

She yawned, stretched and forced herself to get out of bed. Not that it was much of a force, Meghan had always been a morning person. She loved to watch the sun come over the horizon while she drank her coffee on her back deck. It was the peaceful moments in the early morning that gave her hope. So many possibilities for a fresh day. It renewed her spirit after being surrounded by death and disasters.

As much as Meghan worked with death, she was surprisingly optimistic. Human nature could be cruel, heartless and brutal but it could also be strong and kind. She saw the worst of man and the best. Meghan had always preferred to dwell on the nobler of the two. It made her a Pollyanna, but she was okay with that.

The smell of coffee brewing from the automatic maker greeted her as she and Bishop made their way into the kitchen. Meghan breathed deep, getting Bishop's food and refilled his water dish before pouring herself a cup.

She stepped out onto her wooden deck, holding the hot mug between her hands and just let the morning fill her. Birds were greeting the sun, pink and blue tinted the sky, traffic was just beginning for the day and at that moment all was right in Meghan's world. She settled down on her chair, set her feet on the railing and let nature renew her soul like it did every day. In her mind, there wasn't a better way to greet the day except maybe the excited giggles from her nephew.
