Draco watched Harry while he played with Hugo, the two of them dragging small cars around Hermione’s carpets while making vrooming noises. Beside him on the sofa Rose was watching him out of the corner of her eye. Smiling Draco turned his head, leaning in close to her ear when her eyes widened just a fraction. “Sometimes I think Uncle Harry has completely forgotten he’s a Wizard,” Draco whispered to the little girl who just giggled. With a flick of his wand Draco had Rose’s miniature tea set in front of them and was pouring them cups of ‘tea’.

It was easy to forget while they were both entertaining Hermione and Ronald’s children that ever since last night things had been a little tense. Oh sure they both acted like everything was okay, but it was always just below the surface; Draco’s guilt and Harry’s distrust, it circled them both like carrion crows. “Uncle Draco?” Rose’s hand rested on top of his and when he looked down all he could see was her tiny face smiling back at him. “Yes, Rose?” Draco asked, a fond smile forcing its way on to his face as she wriggled until she was on her knees next to him. The small girl rose up and cupped her hand leaning in close to his ear.

“You look sad,” Rose whispered. Sighing softly Draco wrapped one arm around her and pulled her onto his knee, gently running his hand over her soft ginger curls while she hugged him tight around the neck. “I’m not sad, Rosie.” It would be far too difficult to try and explain to a five year old just what was going on inside his head. It was hard enough, after all, to figure it out himself. “Oh,” Rose’s face scrunched up before she turned away; grabbing the tea pot she turned back to Draco. “More tea?”

Draco and Rose’s tea party went on for another twenty minutes, with Harry and Hugo playing with the cars and trains on the other side of the room. Both Ronald and Hermione chuckled when they walked into the room, Hermione shaking her head fondly when she sat down next to Draco. “I never thought I would see the day when Draco Malfoy played imaginary tea parties!” It was almost disturbing how amused Hermione sounded. Huffing Draco crossed his leg over his knee and pointed at Harry and Hugo, “They’re not even using magic!”

“Oh, Draco,” Hermione murmured wistfully. Fighting hard not to blush Draco stood up and brushed his palms against his thighs. “I trust you’re going to feed us now?” Draco asked before walking through to the dining room.

Dinner passed uneventfully and before long they were all seated back in the front room. Ronald flicked through the channels on the telly while Harry cuddled a sleepy Hugo, Draco’s own lap had become Rose’s makeshift pillow. Unintentionally Draco’s eyes continued to drift towards Harry who was softly humming and rocking Hugo until finally the little boys’ eyes closed. Draco’s own hand softly ran over Rose’s hair, his thumb lightly stroking over her forehead like his mother used to do when he was a boy.

“Okay, for dessert it turns out all we have is fruit cake and custard,” Hermione grumbled before plonking down next to Draco. “I don’t know about you but I’d rather go without.” No one complained except for Ronald who bustled out of the room mumbling under his breath about how delicious fruitcake was and that they were all ungrateful heathens.

Leaning forward Hermione to look at her daughter Hermione smiled when she leant back. “You’re really good with her, Draco.” Scoffing Draco raised his head and gave Hermione one of his patented superior glances before he caught sight of Harry moving in his periphery. “They’re good kids, Hermione.”

“Of course they are! They’re mine,” Hermione laughed lightly, her hand gentle against Draco’s shoulder. “You two are going to be ok, aren’t you?”

Draco watched Harry as he gently kissed Hugo’s sleeping brow before glancing down at Rose’s sleeping face and then finally found Hermione’s waiting gaze. Draco did think they were going to be okay, he had so many plans for himself and Harry that it was hard not to feel hopeful. There was just that tiny seed of doubt that continued to harass him. Like the times when Harry’s eyes would linger a second too long when he was looking at another man, or nights like tonight when Draco could see the hungry longing that Harry had for a child. Those doubts made Draco wonder if he was going to lose Harry one day to a desire that Draco couldn’t fulfil.

Pushing his hair out of eyes with his free hand Draco nodded and gave Hermione a tight smile. “Of course. We haven’t been through the last six years for nothing,” Draco said quietly. It would have been too easy to mention the ring that was nestled in a small box at the back of the bureau in the sitting room at home. It would have been too much to say he wasn’t going to give Harry any reason to leave. But they did have each other and even with all of his ridiculous fears Draco knew that he wanted to be with Harry for the rest of his life. Now if only he could manage to find the perfect time to ask Harry.

“You guys have no idea what you’re missing out on!” Ronald announced loudly when he walked back into the room. His mouth was full of half masticated cake and a rather large slab of fruitcake slathered with butter was in his hand. Grimacing Draco shot Hermione a pity filled glance and then looked over at Harry who nodded, “I’m sorry to cut the night short,” Draco said to Hermione as he gently moved Rose from his lap to her mother’s. “But we’re going to have to go now.” Raising his eyebrow at Ronald, Draco shook his head. “Believe me when I say it’s been a pleasure.”

A few minutes later Harry had deposited Hugo into his big boy bed and they were standing out by Hermione and Ronald’s front gate. “Rose is enamoured with you,” Harry said with a huge grin. “It’s not hard, everyone loves me.” Draco said with a sniff. “I know I love you,” Harry’s voice was sincere and soft as his fingers wrapped around Draco’s. “I love you too, Harry.”

Smiling Harry drew Draco into a tight embrace, preparing them both for a side-along Apparition. Softly Draco kissed Harry before pressing their chilled cheeks together. “Let’s go home.”
