She really hadn't meant to cause any kind of upheaval.

Everybody was being very nice about it, and, as the young captain had said, it wasn't as if anyone made the choice to be accidentally transported into another universe thanks to an equipment malfunction.

As Kirk had promised, quarters had been found, shifts arranged. She was established. It ( Read more... )

Pasha had finally been able to tear herself away from Emma's 'novel'- she had scolded herself at the time for calling it such, really it was nothing more then badly disguised smut with a poor storyline- and her thoughts to try and be sociable. For the first time in a long while she hadn't felt like running and had decided on finding a rec room instead.

Walking into the communal area she assessed the seating situation. Sitting with the wrong people with Starfleet was not unlike sitting with the wrong people in school. Deciding of a friendly looking woman she marched over and a placed a tentative smile on her face. “Excuse me, if you vould not mind, could I sit vith you, please?”

Uhura looked up. The officer addressing her was very young, very pretty, and, as far as she could tell, entirely unfamiliar. She smiled.

"Of course," she said, indicating the seat beside her. "I was just hoping somebody would show up and talk to me, actually."

She held out her hand. "I'm Nyota Uhura. Uh - not from this universe."

Well, that felt strange.

"It is nice to meet you Miss Uhura. I am Pasha Andreyevich Chekov." Nodding Pasha took her hand and shook it. The young navigator tilted her head to observe Uhura's face, she did not look the same as this universe or her universe's Uhura but they had the same air of natural authority and beauty.

"I am not natiwe of this uniwerse either." She admitted taking a seat next to her.

"Oh?"

Chekov. Uhura thought for a minute.

"You aren't, by any chance, any relation to Pavel Chekov, are you? He's a friend of mine, back home."

Ah. And here came the awkward part, just as expected, regular as clockwork.

Pasha cringed and replied "You could say that. I am my uniwerse's equiwilent of your Pavel Chekov." Now it was just a matter of asking about the gender thing.

"Oh!"

Uhura's face lit up. "Maybe you're like him, then." She laughed. "Is everybody gender-reversed, where you come from? Compared to here?"

Maybe she should make a scorecard of awkward social interactions, Pasha thought to herself. That would be interesting.

"Uh, not quite. Vhen I arriwed in this uniwerse I had a run in vith a malfunctioning replicator that I vas inwestigating. It turned me into a female." Pasha gave an embarrassed expression. “My uniwerse is almost identical to this one.”

Uhura raised her eyebrows slowly. " - oh!" She blinked. "How - strange. Was this with Jim and Spock, and the prisoners? They can fix it, right?"

Pasha shook her head regretfully. "Nyet, this vas a seperate incident long before vhat happened vith Keptain and Mr Spock. Not sure if I can be changed back."

Uhura nodded. The regret in Pasha's downturned face was evident, and Uhura had no wish to press any issue that was bound to intensify that.

She said, "I'm sorry - I imagine you're sick to death of this discussion."

She smiled. "I see a little of my Pavel in you. Around the eyes." She raised her eyebrows. "He is excellent at shopping."

Pasha cracked a smile. "Do not vorry, it is alvays funny to see people's reactions. If it helps you reacted much better then my best friend, Hikaru, did." She paused to laugh. "I thought he might pass out."

The teenager pulled a face of mild disgust. "Shopping. Not my fawourate actiwity, the vomen of the ship normally drag me along vhenewer ve get shore leawe." She rolled her eyes with the vehemence of every teenager ever forced to follow a group of friends around dull shops when they would much rather be doing something else.

Uhura smiled, too. Nice to hear that Pavel and Hikaru were best friends in this reality. And, apparently, realities similar to it.

"I never had to drag Pavel," she said. "But I appreciate that it might get annoying quickly, if they treat you like a girl when you aren't, really." She paused. "What did your Hikaru say when he saw?"

She grinned wryly, remembering well. "He did not say anything as such, rather he made a wery odd choking noise and stared. Then he vould not beliewe me that I vas me until I told him something only I vould know." Pasha laughed at the memory, it made her glad to have her best friend back, even if they were in the wrong universe.

"Oh, that old trick!"

Pasha's affection for Hikaru was evident in her face. Uhura said, "Do I take it that he arrived after you did, then?"

Pasha nodded, still smiling lightly, an affect most Uhuras seemed to have on her. "A whole six months. He vas saying something about 'portal plants'." She raised her fingers to make air quotes. "Personally I think he just vent stir crazy from inhaling too much plant pollen."

Uhura was laughing. "Plant pollen? I know Sulus, in my experience, are usually overly fond of botany, but - what on earth happened to him?"
