A start at logging the local trails, those that got me into off-roading in the first place. So many good trails in the HUdson Valley; hopefully these posts will be as helpful as those on the SB trails I did a couple years ago.
A short 1.2 mile run from the house on Cutler (el. 800') to Chapman, there the A.T. crosses Old Albany Post Rd at Chapman road (a private dead-end road into the hills; a driveway, really). 1.7 miles from there to Canopus Hill Rd, where the trail crosses the road with little fanfare on the South side but some nice boulders on the north. The crossing is at a point on Canopus near the larger road of Canopus Hollow/Dennytown, just East of 52 Canopus Hill Rd. It's a steep 1.6 miles back up to OAP and thence to the house. Total run 4.5 miles.
The trail itself leaves Chapman (el. 600') heading North and immediately starts climbing the ridge, about 80' before leveling off. A nice run through the woods with few surprises until a right turn and back down 40' or so through a lovely woody glen, nice camping spot. Thereafter it climbs 180' over the next 600 feet or so, bending back South at the top of Canopus hill (el. 820') for a view over Indian Lake that is probably pretty great in Winter. Then gently downhill about 400' over the next quarter mile until the intersection with Canopus Hill Rd (el. 400'). Features include a few wet spots with ferns and slick rocks, and water for the dog.
