Personality is a performance, fashion is merely the costume.
If you apply his theory to a much broader scheme than jelly bracelets (a really trivial comment on his part) and hair extentions...for the most part we (Americans) live in a world (or nation) where people want to look more sincere than they really are. We stereotype people as looking real/looking fake all the time. Yet so many people have situational ethics and mutable personalities...that is a massive existential crisis.
"people want to look more sincere than they really are"
maybe consistent might be substituted for sincere if you're interested in appearing less misanthropic. it's funny to imagine what constitutes sincerity, one could assume a certain reliability, and/or familiarity with one's own behavior. or i guess what i'm getting at is:
can you know who you are if your presentation of self (i.e., your self in the world) is only a performance?
but really then:
can you be sincere if you don't know who you are?
"Personality is a performance, fashion is merely the costume."

Why does he tie the concept of "being real" to fashion and appearance? These things are all about the illusion. Ask Oscar Wilde.
I want to pay for him to take a class on existentialism.
