If you're going to try to stay at that company as a major part of your career, volunteering for a demotion will shoot you in the foot later, when you finish school and want a promotion again.

Is a company who doesn't have a merit-based wage really the kind of company you want to advance in? That's why I left my last job: I wasn't getting paid enough, and if I was promoted, they were going to low-ball me.

I think you're damned if you do, damned if you don't. If you take a demotion, you'll be stuck there until you leave for another company. If you leave to another company, you're better off having the lead position on your resume. If it were me, I'd stay in the lead position and shop for a job at another company.

how bad do these guys need/want you to remain in your current role? if they recognize your importance at all, i would think about giving them an ultimatum. tell them you will leave the role unless they can give you a fair wage.
