donkey's lips do not fit onto a horse's mouth

Why is it that on television shows a curse word causes an explosion of hilarity? A man comes on the screen, dressed in some sort of outfit and a white wig, and end his short speech with 'fuck you', and the crowd laughs hard. Curse words are nothing original, nothing witty. These people are just repeating each other, going back and forth with boringly similiar routines.

I understand if a word is used for emphasis, but it is as if the shock of hearing people say the words with little provocation is enough to make then laugh. Has the public's sense of humor always been this crude, or is it just with such a wide range of communication that it is obvious?
