hypothetically, Shinji is the Lavender Town Gym Leader. Unfortunately, since most people think it's cursed and/or haunted, not many people come to visit him on non-gym-battle business. As such, he's had to make due with talking to his ever-present, faithful companion, Gastly.
Also, the Lavendar Town Gym has been infested with Zubats, who have taken a liking to Shinji's demeanor. Yet another reason for Shinji's dismay and infrequent guests.
Shinji's battle team is largely psychic-based and is comprised of the following Pokemon:
-Gastly (Companion)
-Drowzee
-Hypno
-Aerodactyl (because he's not cool enough for a Charizard)
-Eevee (supposed to be an Umbreon or an Espeon but Shinji can't bring himself to force it to evolve)
He also has a Timid Abra who always runs away from people and a douchebag Mr. Mime who is always making fun of him behind his back.
Anything I'm forgetting, Hymn?

[edit] He also moved the Saffron City Gym to Lavender Town because he doesn't have a bike (Kamio and/or Momo stole it) and he doesn't like the commute.
