Sabbath painting

May 07, 2009 19:00

This painting depicts two magically glowing Sabbath candles. One has the first paragraph of the Torah written in Hebrew (about the creation of the first day, with "let there be light"). I did this because when I light the Sabbath candles, I feel as if I stretch back that far-- as if I can feel the beginnings of creation.

This painting is part of a series I'm doing where I write Hebrew Torah passages in ink on delicate large pieces of tissue-like paper, and then carefully glue them onto painted surfaces. This difficult process is rewarding to me because I feel like I'm taking part in some sort of ancient mystical craft.

The background is a rich turquoise color with the blessing over the candles written in almost transparent golden Hebrew lettering-- like whispers in the air. 20" x 30" acrylic on hand-stretched canvas.
