So, I walked into the Shopper's Drugmart near my house the other day not actually needing anything or expecting to make a purchase. I walked out with nail polish, ice tea powder, a magazine, and a copy of Good Will Hunting on DVD that was on sale for $9.99.
Good Will Hunting was (I guess still is, I just haven't watched it in FOREVER) one of my favorite movies, and is what introduced me to the Elliott Smith. Now, I suppose this note comes a few months premature, as the fourth anniversary of his death isn't until October 21st, but the special features have got me thinking about it now.
In the special features of the DVD you can watch the video for Miss Misery, the song that little indie Elliott Smith wrote for the movie, and that was nominated for an Academy Award. The entire video is of him, singing. Is it weird that I actually found it hard to watch and had to turn it off? Is it weird that 1% of me still thinks that his girlfriend did it? This is all very reminiscent of the whole Cobain/Love conspiracy. But let's not get into that.
I have now experienced the death of two important (important to me, anyways) musical figures: Smith in 2003, and Anthony Wilson, who died just a few days ago from complications with cancer. For those of you who don't know, Tony Wilson was basically responsible for the influence of most of the alternative music we listen to today. He was extremely important in the creation of the Manchester post-punk scene; most notably, the groundbreaking 'label' Factory Records, which then, in turn, spawned Joy Division, New Order, etc.
Where am I going with this? Nowhere I guess... I suppose it's just weird and coincidental that all these things seem to resurface at the same time.
As you were.
