For most of my life, when asked about my favourite sport, I have always answered football. (The real kind, which some of you may call soccer.) But really, even my lifelong devotion to Real Madrid does not make me hold my breath in anticipation the way a really good tennis match does. The very first website I ever made (at the age of 12, using the WYSIWYG editor that came with Netscape Navigator) was a fansite for Carlos Moyá, the first Spanish tennis player to rank number one. Unfortunately, his time at the top was terribly short-lived. (That said, he is still awesome. Moyá forever!)
I’ve always had a fondness for Spanish athletes; it’s probably just colonial mentality. For years I’ve been waiting for a real Spanish tennis champion to arrive on the scene, and now that he’s here, I can scarcely believe my luck.
I didn’t believe he was going to win. I am duly chastised, and a terrible fan. Mr Nadal, I will never doubt you again.
But now, for the truly important part of this post.
Dear Mr Federer,
I’m generally not the kind of person who likes to gloat. I acknowledge your massive contribution to the sport and your fantastic skill, and even your gracious winner’s demeanour. However, in light of your consistently petulant and uncharitable post-match interviews when you lose, all I have to say is: SUCK IT.
And to cap off this wonderful start to the Grand Slam season, Ana Ivanovic got knocked out early. Ha. If only Dinara hadn’t gone down so easily, but against Serena Williams, I really can’t blame her.
I can only hope the rest of the season will be this good. XD
