Prompt: Manny and Ivelis during a thunderstorm when the power goes out in their building
Manny couldn’t say with any certainty how they’d gotten into this particular scenario, but he wasn’t exactly going to complain about it either. The rainy season had struck El Barrio and Manhattan as a whole much harder than it usually did, the influx of warmth and humid air causing raucous thunderstorms every so often.
Today’s storm had started at 11 o’clock in the morning and had continued relentlessly throughout the day, flooding the street gutters and making the street lights flicker. It had, at last, succeeded in severing a power line somewhere, plunging most of 2nd Avenue into complete darkness.
It was greeted with loud shouting when it cut off their soap opera right at the most climatic scene of the season, TV sputtering into electric death and silence ringing from every corner. A particularly loud thunderclap had Ivelis glancing at the large windows with narrowed eyes. She shooed Manny into the bathroom, shoving an armful of blankets at him and leaving him to stumble around in the small room as she disappeared into a different part of the apartment.
“So I was thinking”, she announced as she reappeared in the bathroom doorway, a flashlight pressed awkwardly between her cheek and shoulder and a glass of Ovaltine in each hand, “that we should probably use up the milk since the fridge is dead. No use letting it go to waste, right?”
So maybe he couldn’t exactly find the logic of holing up in their tiny bathroom while a storm raged outside, but maybe sitting in the bathtub with her back pressed against his chest and their fingers intertwined while she made them into shadow puppets on the wall by flashlight glow and narrated a story in a soft voice didn’t require a rational explanantion.
