すみません!
Guess I'll do a quick update, since I was brought into this world 31 years ago today.
....dang, I can't believe how fast time goes.
I've been horribly boring of late... mostly due to stress, somewhat to migraines, which have been frequent lately. All my free time when I'm not at work is attempting to learn javascript (and feel like my progress in said field is as slow as molasses), and also studying Japanese, because progress in that field makes me feel positive and happy about myself where other things don't.
I'm using a system called WaniKani, and it's purpose is literally to teach you kanji and Japanese vocabulary using kanji. It's designed for beginners, and it uses an SRS timed system and mnemonics to make things really stick in your head for the long term. I've been using it for about 2 weeks or so, and I absolutely love it. Because of the timed system, there's absolutely no way to speed it up, and therefore it takes anywhere from 13 months to 2 years to complete it. But at the end of the program I'll know over 1,800 kanji and 5,000 vocabulary words, including multiple readings of each kanji. Some days it takes me 10 minutes to do quick reviews, other days it takes 2 hours to study everything, but I haven't missed a day yet, and I'm not about to anytime soon.
WaniKani is about to leave beta next month, and the price of a subscription will go up. If someone is seriously interested in joining the program before then, let me know and I can probably send a link to the secret sign up page (which I got just for paying for Textfugu). However, it does not teach grammar, or words that only use hiragana, so it's not the only thing you'll need. But it's amazing for what it does teach, at least for someone that doesn't know any kanji at all until now. Also, you pretty much need to know both kana systems to use it.
I'm almost on level 3 out of 60 levels, and it's boosted my confidence immensely, even in other areas not related to Japanese. I get so excited when I watch youtube videos and actually recognize kanji now!
Otherwise work still sucks horribly, no real change or possibility on the other job I almost had, and I have 2 months-ish to finish school so I can get back half of my tuition (seriously, they made a deal to get students to complete the program within 12 months, I think many people besides me are struggling.) So sadly very little time for games or fun right now. But one of these days good things will happen, right?
