It's NOT a tumor!! WHEW!!
The vet who did Buttercup's surgery said she's never seen anything like it. All the other vets who looked at the mass were 99.9% sure this was going to be a tumor.
What is was is something very odd. A mass of fatty tissue that for some strange reason became encapsulated and severely infected. Part of the tissue showed a VERY small umbilical cord hernia. We all knew she had a tiny bump there, but the vets all figured that was just her cord scar and/or scar from when we had her spayed. Was this related to the tiny hernia? Maybe, but they can't say for sure. It was basically just "one of those weird things that happen in life".
Buttercup is recovering well. We have her on sedatives because her surgery wound is rather large -- I think I counted 18 stitches. The drugs keep her calm and less likely to fuss over the wound. A lot of skin tissue was removed in the event this was a tumor. Luckily she's a hound dog with LOTS extra of skin all over!
We are so incredibly relieved!! Now we just have to get through the next 8 days until the stitches come out!
