As the title of the thread states, why do you play RPGs?
Is it the style of the gaming where you start out with a few characters who are generally weak to begin with and you eventually make them unstoppable forces?
Or could it be possibly the stories that revolve around them?
I come from a family of avid bookworms. As soon as I learned the read I was diving into books. Anything I could get my hands on I read. Of course I also played video games at the time. My first RPG was Final Fantasy on the NES but I was 5 so I didn't care for it at all and plus I didn't understand the concept of leveling up.
So it was years later when I picked up the game of Final Fantasy III (aka VI) on the SNES. What captivated me the most? The story. You start off in the beginning of the game to stop the Empire from recreating another War of the Magi and then the second game rolls you into stopping that evil clown Kefka.
This is not a rant to praise FF6, but at the time it was and still is my favorite game because of the story. That being my first entry into RPGs got me addicted to the genre.
My girlfriend doesn't understand why I like RPG's so much. I try to explain to her it's more of an interactive novel than anything sometimes. You do a fair share of reading while playing an RPG.
Now I'm just gonna list a few of the RPG's I've played and give a brief description of their stories just to give more reason why i play RPG's for the story.
Chrono Trigger/Cross: Who could not love these games? Though the first one was about time travel and saving the future from that horrendous being lavos, it was still quite a fun tale. The second one delved deeper I felt into alternate dimensions which really made me think of, if I had an alternate self.
Suikoden I: Basically this game puts you in the role of a son of a famous general. You basically build up a rebel army against the empire and eventually have to kill your own father.
Suikoden II: This game touched me very much. Besides the plot of Luca trying to take over the Dunan country, at the very core it was about friendship surviving all odds.
Xenogears: Though extremely long, the story is what drew me in. It was the whole mystery of what the heck is going on? I gotta know more! That kept me going on some parts in the game. Especially Babel Tower >_<
And to name one last one:
.hack series: The 1st four I played were good (haven't finished the 2nd series yet) Though it wasn't the best story it was interesting I'll add. A story about a MMORPG putting people in acoma was a bit freaky but awesome.
Those aren't all the RPGs i've played but those were some of my favorites. Sorry this post was long but I just wanted to share my love of RPG's.
