For the record I hardly think you're the fanboy type :) You've posted about quite a few bands in here, which pretty much automatically disqualifies you from the stereotype I had in mind.
I've ensured that the album I heard was definitely the same as what ended up being released. The production is a tad better, but not much - you really can't hear Maynard much at all. And no - my opinion didn't change (more listens seemed to only find more things I didn't like), I held onto it for about another 2 weeks and ended up deleting the lot...
... with one exception, the one track "10,000 Days (Wings Part 2)" which has in some ways grown on me - it'd be the one track where I can agree with what you said about the introspective side, although I don't see the Tool I know and love in there, it's almost like a track by a different band. The music is annoyingly lazy (I am absolutely convinced I could write better) but Maynard's lyrics have depth and feeling, and it comes across.
In talking to other disappointed Tool fans (of whom there seem to be many) about this album I've come into some amazing bands like Porcupine Tree, Dredg and Oceansize who fill that "gap" for me.
