"You ignored the rules of engagement. In a fair fight I'd kill you."
That was not, strictly speaking, true.
In a fair fight Jack would not have been already worn down from hours
at sea in a sinking boat. He wouldn't have been still soaked
through from rescuing the blond spitfire that had turned out to be the
Governor's daughter, wouldn't have been mocked and threatened and shot
at, and certainly wouldn't have had the remains of his shackles still
around his wrists, throwing him further off balance and hampering his
every movement. To be perfectly honest, in a fair fight, Will
Turner wouldn't have stood a chance.
But Jack was seldom perfectly honest, and then only when it suited his
purposes, so he didn't trouble himself to correct Will's
assumptions. "That's not much incentive for me to fight fair
then, is it?" he asked instead, spinning the wheel in the movement that
would knock the lad overboard….
Besides, when you thought about it, 'fair' seldom had much bearing on
reality. He had a ship again, and while she wasn't his Pearl, she
was still one of the charmingest vessels he ever had the pleasure to
commandeer. If he had to suffer a few well-meaning lads with hero
complexes in return, well, that was just part of the plan wasn't it?
"Now, as long as you're just hanging there, pay attention…."
