Irreplaceable
He hated the Interceptor’s replacement right up until he stood at her
helm, one hand resting reluctantly on the wheel, and heard the
Interceptor’s voice laughing like a breeze through a lost corner of his
soul. “Thought you could get rid of me so easily did you, Captain-mine?” she asked teasingly.
James closed his eyes as if it could make remembered misery less painful. “Yes.” It couldn’t. “I did.”
“Never.” Her sincerity rang through every part of him. “Never never never. I promise.”
Green eyes glittered when he opened them, but it seemed like a shadow
had departed from them. The Interceptor - now the Valiant - cut
playfully through the water, her sails angled to fly on the wings of
the wind... and James smiled, a true smile, unbroken, for the first
time in months.
Now, bring me that horizon.

I must down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky,
And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by,
And the wheel's kick and the wind's song and the white sail's shaking,
And a grey mist on the sea's face and a grey dawn breaking.
