There's some information about clones in the visual dictionary. Here's some of it that might be helpful:

Elite clones
The Kaminoans, who built the clone army, believed the Jedi Knights were too few in number to serve as an elite force or as field commanders for millions of soldiers. So they provided some of the clones with enhanced programming and extra training, which allowed them to function as special forces or chain-of-command links between the Jedi and standard troopers. These clones displayed initiative and leadership ability and closely resembled their bounty hunter template.

Advanced ReconThe Kaminoans created a selected number of clone troopers to be trained personally by bounty hunter Jango Fett. Designated Advanced Recon Commandos (ARCs), they worked in teams to execute special missions. Elite ARC squads were deployed soon after the war began on Muunilist and other strategic worlds. They operated autonomously, but reported to Jedi Generals ( ... )

It certainly helps me, thank you! I've got an order 66 fic in my head, and have been trying to collect what little info there is on the clones so I don't head too far afield in my story.

Thank you for this; I'm sure it'll come in hand.

However, I'm still stuck with the ranking system. It is clear from the books and the movie that even within the elite and ARC troopers, and even the clone troopers, there are ranks. *sigh* I guess I'll have to omit that.

Clone commanders use name in addition to numerical designations This practice was initiated by the Jedi themselves, as well as other progressive-thinking officials in the Republic to foster a growing fellowship.

Where is this from? In the books, the ARC and the RC all have names, and in Hard Contact, the RC Sgt. says that it's rude for Jedi to ask their names because they are known only to other clones.

Anakin was the first to give a clone a "name." Alpha, was, I believe the first. I've forgotten if that's in one of the books or one of the comics (I think it was part of the Dark Horse stuff.)

Where is this from?
Again, this is from the Visual Dictionary which George goes over and approves. He doesn't check/read every detail in every novel but he does go over the VD pretty hard. It wouldn't shock me, however, if this made no sense. After all, Jedi get married, have kids, and are knights when they get put on the Council (Ki-Adi-Mundi in all cases) yet George uses all three of those as factors as to why Anakin would go Dark Side. *shrugs* It's the EU. It's full of holes.

How does this work out in terms of timing though? According to EU, it takes years to train elice clones, but the entire Clone Wars lasted 3 years.

The Visual Dictionary states that Jango trained most of the original elite clones so the decision was made long before the war started to have elite forces and commanders within the clone army.

I must have my history confused, but wasn't Jango training them for the Separatists?

I'm getting to the point that maybe I should ignore the books and just write. LOL

BTW, what is the Visual Dictionary? A book? A website?

No.

Jango was the template for all the clones and did all the training. Just watch AotC again. He lives on the station, he's the genetic template for the clone army, and he trains the clones. The reason you may be confused is because he seems to work for the Separatists. That isn't true. He works for Dooku. Dooku assumed the identity of the Jedi Master Sifo Dias and used his name to order the clone army "for the Jedi." In fact, he was ordering them on behalf of Darth Sidious who was manipulating the situation so he could take over the galaxy, make the Jedi look bad, and manage to wipe out the Jedi order.

Clear as mud, ne? ^_^

No, that's very clear. See, I've only been able to watch AotC once, not for some strange reason (I even have the DVD), but I can't get past all the Ani/Padme parts, so I only remembered that Jango was making them for Dooku.

A lot more makes sense now. LOL

Oh, almost forgot about this part.

The Visual Dictionary is a book.
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0756611288/qid=1118869142/sr=2-1/ref=pd_bbs_b_2_1/103-1818345-8654216

It's got a lot of great information in it and, short of getting the official encyclopedia, it's your best bet for facts.

The encyclopedia will now need an update to include information from Ep III and recent books/comics as well so having this is and the official novel are likely your best bets for information until they do the next update.
