Summary: He could see them through the open door, Ruby's head lying in Mina's lap, Mina's hand playing with her hair. He shouldn't disturb them. He shouldn't listen.
They'd found her at last, thank god, in a warehouse near where she'd last been seen. Ruby was tied up, clothes ripped to almost nothing, scared but in one piece. A grade 12 that fed off sexual pain. Rupert's blood chilled at the thought of what could have happened if they hadn't found her in time. Physically the freak hadn't touched her but mentally, well the way that she had flinched at Luke's hand on her arm told them everything they needed to know about her current mental well being.
They couldn't take her home. Rupert suspected that she wouldn't have gone anyway. Home was, he hoped, a place of safety and right now she felt anything but safe. Besides, what could she tell her parents? Sorry I'm so jumpy tonight, a green freak with one eye, scales, a mohawk and bad breath tied me up and told me in great depth how he was going to rape me? No, it was better for her to stay at Mina's house with Rupert to keep an eye on them both.
Rupert moved silently up the stairs to the bedroom where Mina and Ruby were sitting on the bed. He had bottle of whiskey and some glasses as he suspected that both women would benefit from a drop of something a bit stronger than they usually had before sleep. Mina's reaction to the whole series of events had surprised him. He'd expected her to be concerned, but he hadn't seen her worry so much about anyone in years. Perhaps she was warming to the younger woman after all.
“When he-... I thought he was going to-... I-... Oh god-...”
Rupert hesitated at the sound of Ruby's broken and disjointed voice. He could see them through the open door; Ruby's head lying in Mina's lap, Mina's hand playing with her hair. He shouldn't disturb them. He shouldn't listen.
He edged closer to the door as Mina hushed her soothingly.
“You need to sleep Ruby. It'll all seem less real in the morning”
Ruby laughed, he watched her shoulders shake, and there was an edge of hysteria in her voice, “He told me.... I can hear him in my head... telling me he was going to-... what he was going to do...”
“It's ok, you're safe now,” One of Mina's hands was touching Ruby's hair, stroking it, smoothing it down in a way that seemed oddly intimate, “He won't get you here,” Her other hand was settled on Ruby's waist as she lay curled up against Mina, a comforting presence, “I won't let anything happen to you now. I've got you,”
A dozen odd moments from the last few weeks flickered to the front of his mind. Mina going searching with Ruby for books in the deepest corners of the stacks. And taking a bloody long time to find them. Little touches as Ruby walked past Mina to fetch something. A sudden increase in the number of times Mina offered Ruby a lift.
All under his nose and he hadn't pieced it together.
“All I could think of... when he-...” Ruby's voice was soft and Rupert had to strain to hear, “all I could think of was you, was this morning” Mina had given her a lift to the stacks. Just happened to be passing the estate on the way, “How nice it was, how good, how... and he was trying to-...” the tears in her voice were evidenced by her shaking shoulders, “He wanted to destroy it and... and I could still hear him. Still talking. Telling me. Everything. Even after Rupert killed-... Even after he was gone I could still hear him...”
“Shhh... I've got you, you're safe now” Mina's voice was soothing. And caring in a way that he hadn't heard in a long time. Or he had heard, but never noticed, “No one can touch you here.”
There was a long silence as Ruby's sobbing quietened and Mina's hands drifted over her hair.
“I know,” Ruby's voice was still laced with tears, but something else as well, a strength that hadn't been there earlier, “I feel safe with you... you make that bastard silent”
Rupert decided that the whiskey could wait.
