The Essential Tragic Nature of Man...

Ok, so Lacy and I were talking last night and something we brought up just became the impetus for this entry.

In Spahns history class we learned about "The Essential Tragic Nature of Man," which by my understanding is the idea that when you get right down to it, life really does kinda suck...

Life can be a lot of fun someetimes... But for the most part, life is suffering...

But a lot of people don't agree with that...

So here's what I thought:
As we grow from kids into adults, we have this protective covering over our minds. That protection keeps the pain of life away from us, and thus we can live content in our childhood ignorance.
But eventually for most people, that covering gets ripped off... Sometimes more violently than it should. Something, and it can be an event or a realization or any number of things, alerts us to the pain and suffering that we were oblivious to until that point...

After that cover is gone, we are forced to rely on our own strength... And depending on age, personality, and mental condition, we either survive or break down because of our exposure...
For example, people who realize this suffering at age 10 are a lot less likely to keep going than someone who realizes it at 25...
Some people carry their protective covering to the grave...

I think that as soon as we lose that, we get old...

This is reminding me a lot of Catcher in the Rye...
Maybe a lot of us, myself included, are a lot like Holden in a way... We struggle not against growing old, but growing up...
And those of us who have gotten old try like hell to keep the people we care about from doing the same...

Haha, sorry for this kinda depressing entry, although I suppose compared to my other ones this one looks pretty nice...
Oh well...
I have to go pack for Outdoor Ed... I'm leaving in a few hours...

And you guys had better hope I don't get cell phone service down in Georgia, cause Lacy and Molly im calling you both from the campsite if I do...
See y'all on Monday...
If I don't drown...

Haha,
Dicey
