Blanton Museum Opening

On Sunday, I braved the masses and went to the opening of the new Blanton Museum of Art.

This is the best part of that museum:

There were long lines snaking back on themselves to get in. The sponsors had set out pallets of bottled water with the company's name printed on the label. The trashcans inside and outside the museum were crammed with half-drunk plastic water bottles, which was the most incongruous aspect of the whole afternoon and left me feeling unsettled. Despite the sterility of the entry way and lobby area, with their plain white walls that extend for two stories up to the sunlights shown in the pictures, it was a great backdrop for the art.

There are three major areas of exhibit space: one for special exhibitions, one for classical European art, and one for contemporary art. Here is a view from the entrance to the main hall for contemporary art.

I spent almost two hours there, but I think you could easily spend three...I didn't look at everything closely because I wanted to get home to meet babybear, navydave and Ruby. I also didn't stay as long as I might have otherwise because the ol' peepers were giving out. I found I needed to get right up on the signage to read about the paintings. I wandered to the tent behind the museum to snare some sugar cookies and lemonade, and then walked to the car. It was bright and warm and sunny--a great day for adventures if you ask me. ;-)
