I don't remember how or when I first learned of the Guide, but it was in my teens. Once I read it, I was hooked. We didn't have cable, so I found the nerve to ask my mom if we could go over to her friend Liz's house, so I could watch the show on PBS. I was heartbroken when Douglas Adams died, and delighted when I first saw Google today.

Yes, I had many feels when I saw the google doodle. I was able to identify all the guide entries that appeared on the screen though. No one has ever match Adams' writing for me. I think the closest would be Christopher Moore's "A Dirty Job"...

Omigosh! Common nerd moment: when I first saw "The Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy," I thought it was an astronomy book too!

I was in college--I think one of my good friends introduced me. I remember watching the British TV series and chanting together: "When men were real men, women were real women, and small furry creatures from Alpha Centauri were real small furry creatures from Alpha Centauri." And I had a sort-of friend who was a real-life Marvin, only with curly dark hair. No fooling.

More later--a friend just came over.

Lol I think that is why I was so determined to make all of my friends read the book when I was in high school, to have moments like that...but it never really happened until I was older and found more mature and committed geeks ;-)

I haven't read any of the books in the series for a long time now. Not since high school. I should fix that.

Because towels and 42 fix everything

Omg yes go re-read them right now! At least the first two...I'll wait here. :) honestly, I keep a copy at my desk at work so if I need a quick giggle, I can flip open to any point and smile.

Red Dwarf totally deserves its own nostalgia post! Love that series, own all, the DVDs though I have been hesitant to watch the latest special...everyone looks so old, I'm afraid it will be depressing lol!
