orangerful's 2014 mix tracklist

Jan 23, 2015 21:33

Okay, so I think everyone has their mix now? Maybe? If you haven't listened to it yet, no peeking under the cut!!! The rule is to listen first without knowing what is coming.

For those of you that have listened (and hopefully liked) the mix, here is the official track list + a little bit of why these songs are on the mix. Because I think WAY TOO MUCH about making this mix every year.

1. Life In Color - OneRepublic --> okay it was hard to find a song that was NOT already a single by this group, everything on this album was so catchy and fun to sing along with. It was also tricky to find a first track for the mix to kick things off. First it was 'Everything is Awesome' but then I felt like that should be the finale. But this song felt like a good way to approach the look back at 2014 and the start of 2015. So yeah. :)

2. Simple As This - Jake Bugg --> I never read or watched Fault in Our Stars but damn the soundtrack was awesome. Found so many good artists this way. Jake Bugg surprised me. At first listen, I thought it was an old 60s folk song, finding out he was a modern singer was a surprise. His album is up on Spotify and I did listen to it a few times, but this was the song that introduced him to me. Again, looking back at 2014 and 2015, the idea of being happy with the simple things felt like a good way to start off the mix story...

3. We're Doing a Sequel - The Muppets --> I love The Muppets and right now it's the closest thing to new Flight of the Conchords music with Brett writing all the songs **points at icon**. This was my favorite song from the new movie. And, again, this marks the 11th year I've been making mix CDs for LJ buddies. Not quite a sequel but definitely the continuing story.

4. Hooked on a Feeling - Blue Suede --> Guardians of the Galaxy was a surprise hit with everyone, especially me. This song the introduction to the movie, featured heavily in the trailer, showing that GotG was not going to take itself that seriously. I'm sure the members of Blue Suede are trying to understand all the royalty checks rolling in right now.

5. All of the Stars - Ed Sheeran --> FioS soundtrack again! Probably my most listened to album of the year. I have a soft spot for Sheeran and I fell in love with this song immediately. Little bit over-produced but whatever. <3

6. Shadow - Bleachers --> I think plumxxjam is to blame for turning me on to this band. The whole album is fantastic and, again, it was hard to find a song that wasn't on the radio. Considering that "All of the Stars" was a big declaration of love and talking about the stars and such, I liked that Bleachers talked about the other side, that when you're feeling small, they will find a way to love you.

7. Rockstar - Great Big World --> lostacanthus sent me the song "Say Something" on Spotify one day and while I liked that track, I ended up enjoying the rest of the album much more. The songs are fun, the vocals are crisp in almost a showtune kind of way. And now we've gone from the love of a single person to wanting to be adored by many. Of trying to reach for those dreams, no matter how far away they seem.

8. Young and Beautiful - Lana Del Rey --> I someone fell into a movie soundtrack hole here, it was not on purpose. Del Rey's other album never clicked with me, but I did like this song a LOT. And after two songs confessing love and a song about wanting to be famous, I thought these lyrics about wondering if it could all last, and believing that yes, it can all last. Will you still love me? I know you will. (though Del Rey's sad voice always makes me wonder how much she really believes it).

9. Poet - Bastille --> "I have written you down now you will live forever", I love that line. The power of the story, of writing, we all know it and appreciate it. That image of the rockstar, young, beautiful, sexy, powerful - that is what lives on. And the idea of the poet saying that this is the gift he has given to his love, immortality through verse, come on, it's romantic.

10. Little Games - The Colourist --> We saw this band open for Paramore and I really liked their sound. I think this was the first song they played. This is my relationship story getting a little more settled in, calling each other out on the little games. This is also when my mind started to turn to a "song I think would have been better on the Mockinjay soundtrack than what Lorde put on there".

11. Dark Doo Wop - MS MR --> Okay, I'm not even sure HOW I got this song. I think it must have been a free Starbucks song or something. Anyway, I did listen to other MS MR stuff and really liked it but, again, my mind went to Hunger Games/Mockingjay playlist and this felt right. Burn burn burn but maybe you should stick around.

12. Word Crimes - Weird Al Yankovic --> If you thought for one second Weird Al would not be on this mix, you were fooling yourself! Okay, so he doesn't quite fit in with the flow of what was happening but sometimes you have to take a break from all the dystopian doom and just have a grammar lesson, yeah?

13. Guren no yumiya - Linked Horizon --> This is the main theme to the anime of Attack on Titan which I LOVED!!!!!!! I did cut it short, sorry I couldn't manage to make it less abrupt. The full track was something like 10 minutes long! Crazy Japanese rock.

14. I See Fire - Ed Sheeran --> yes, I know, this song was written for The Hobbit movie but it sorta works for Mockingjay too!!! Yes, I heard the word "fire" and think "Katniss" apparently. But, again, I felt like it fit that movie more than the weird dance mix Lorde put together. The quiet sound reminded me of the people in District 12 sitting and singing together...before the darkest timeline.

15. Things We Lost in the Fire - Bastille --> Fire, Katniss, YUP! Also, I just love this song. I used to turn it up very loud and dance around the apartment to it on days when I was home alone. Bastille gets my band/album of the year award, btw. I know they are honored.

16. The Hanging Tree - Jennifer Lawrence --> I'm sorry but the remix of this is just WRONG! Give me JLaw's voice any way, scared, nervous (because she was) singing this folk tune. Again, why was this not on the song soundtrack?? It was hidden in the movie soundtrack mix.

17. Ooooh Child - Five Stairsteps --> THIS SONG SAVES THE GALAXY! COME ON! IT'S A DANCE OFF!

18. Let Me In - Grouplove --> Okay, best mix of the year goes to the FioS soundtrack because I sorta loved it. This song was the first song I became obsessed with in 2014, I don't even think I knew it was on the soundtrack...how the heck did I hear it? Who knows. But I loved it.

19. We Won't Go Home - The Colourist --> Getting to the end of the mix but we won't go home!

20. Rollercoaster - Bleachers --> This was NOT in that commercial when I made the mix! I just like that this song is about riding on a rollercoaster...of life!

21. This Is The New Year - Great Big World --> This was almost the first track but then I decided it was better off near the end. Happy new year!

22. Everything Is Awesome --> I've gushed on and on about The LEGO movie and how much of a joy it was to watch, such a surprise. And this song, OMG after seeing the movie and knowing the context....yeah it's even better.

Thanks for listening!!
