To be honest, this wasn't the most exciting project because of a) the content, and b) the lack of direction. Also, I felt like I could have done a lot better on it (eg. made a less amateur look) if I was allowed more artistic liberty to do what I want to do. But in any case, I think this is going to be the final product, and even if I'm not totally proud of it, it was a good experience trying to handle such a large project.
04/13/08: v.1.4 (pseudo-final)
One day while bored at work, my co-worker Amanda and I began discussing her band,
The Amanda Shelly Band, and she brought up that she's frustrated because she's been trying to produce their next CD for the past 6 months, but bureaucratics inefficiencies within the group have become barriers for any and all steps forward. With most of the band dispersed about the country nowadays, development is slow and individual pickiness stops whatever progress is made. Great story, but my attention stopped shortly after she mentioned "CD cover"--it was all I needed to hear.
Henceforth, I pleaded and pleaded for the rest of the shift for her to let me take creative control of the project and show her what I can do. I think she was actually rather indifferent to the idea as long as the project finally gets finished, and she agreed.
That was about a month three months ago. Designs take time. Studies takes time. Life takes time. The cover's process will be kept here. Oldest versions at the bottom; newest versions at the top. Suggestions way welcome!
04/02/08: v.1.4
This is pretty much the final. I'm so sick of working on this project, haha!
01/20/08: v.1.3
She didn't really like the white font and Clay didn't like the horizontal distortion of the text so I had to change all that. Also, the smaller text of the band's name was replaced with the members' names as well.
12/02/07: v.1.2
Amanda's response e-mail: "I think I would like the butterfly to have different shades of red/orange/yellow (warm colors), and a few of the squares in the background to be different shades of cool colors (blue, green, yah) Just random squares, and the rest grey and white like you did."
11/29/07: v.1.1
Now contains her desired font and a sketch-y butterfly to boot! The better part of a Friday night well spent (others free to disagree). Also, text warping for the win. However, still just a black and white sketch because I wanted to make sure she liked it before spending an indefinite amount of time messing about with color.
11/14/07: v.1.0
A quick draft before going into work that day so I'd have something, anything, to show her. Basically, I just made a grid, put some text on, and slapped on a butterfly that I found on Google Images.
