Étienne took a last drag of his cigarette, before snubbing it out under the heel of his boot. He pulled the collar of his coat tighter around his neck and pushed off the wall he had been leaning on. He walked over to a man that crossed the street and fell in step with him.
“Clutch shot in the second, there.” He said, looking ahead and not glancing at the stranger.
“Thanks. Hope it was worth the wait.” The other man replied, not looking at Étienne either.
“It was. I knew you had it in you.”
They stopped at the light and waited for it to change. Étienne’s companion finally spared him a brief glance and shrugged. He was much taller than Étienne and his shoulders were broad.
“Anyways, if you want to come, you know where to find me. The back door will be unlocked.” Étienne added quietly.
“I don’t know... give me an hour. If I’m not there then I’m not coming.”
Étienne sighed. He was used to his friend’s evasive answers and normally, he would have moved on a long time ago, but he knew his friend’s situation was quite different.
“Alright, see you.”
They parted ways when the light turned and Étienne went home. He made sure to unlock his back door, before he undressed and made himself comfortable in his bed. He still had more than half an hour to kill and he decided to do some light reading.
Étienne must have fallen asleep, for he was suddenly jostled and his book fell to the side, when he heard a soft cough from somewhere else in the room.
“Sorry... I can leave if you’re not up to it.”
Étienne looked at this tall man standing in the doorway of his room, nervously playing with the hem of his shirt. He recognised the unsure gleam in his eyes and the way he bit his lip. He looked like an overgrown puppy and Étienne couldn’t say no to him.
“Come here, you silly man.” He opened up his arms and the other man easily went over to him.
Étienne pulled him down by the flaps of his coat and pressed their lips together. His friend easily opened up for him and Étienne could taste the cognac and the three or so cigarettes he must have had on his way here, while he made up his mind.
Étienne helped him peel off each layer of clothing with familiarity and satisfaction. He uncovered every inch of skin, until his companion was laid bare underneath him and he was straddling his hips.
“What can I do for you?” Étienne murmured, trailing kisses from his shoulder to his forehead.
“I... I don’t know. You’re always doing for me. Maybe - maybe I can?...”
Étienne quieted him with a deep kiss that left him breathless and already half hard.
“You know I don’t mind. Plus, you must be tired... I know you can’t always have it like this, so relax. Be yourself. Enjoy it.”
The man arched up and Étienne smirked, grinding down on him. Étienne liked him like this. He enjoyed being able to unwrap this other side of this man that no one else was allowed to see - that his friend didn’t let anyone else see.
It angered Étienne that his friend couldn’t be himself at all times, but at least his partner could have this when he wanted to. When he allowed himself a shot at being authentic and maybe even happy - for a few minutes.
“So, what can I do for you?” Étienne asked again. His friend looked up at him with wide brown eyes and he couldn’t help but kiss him again. His friend was shy and sometimes insecure like this and Étienne loved the contrast from when he was on the ice.
“What did you have in mind?”
Étienne trailed a finger down his chest and liked the way the other man shivered. “I thought I could blow you first - but not to the point of coming and then I could ride you. Or maybe, we can do what we did last time? Blow and then fuck you?” His friend let out a plaintive little moan at the second suggestion and Étienne was pleased. “Then we have a plan...”
--
“Hey, thanks...” His friend murmured from the folds of Étienne’s chest, where he had buried his face in the crook of his neck.
Étienne carded his fingers through the man’s hair and held him a little closer. “You know I don’t mind.”
They were quiet for some time. Étienne thought his friend would fall asleep on him like this and he wouldn’t have minded. He had never stayed the entire night and Étienne thought maybe this would be the first.
“I should stop doing this though...” His friend mumbled, his voice thick.
Étienne sighed. He had lost count on how many times he had heard this. “Why?”
“Someone could find out.”
“And what’s the worst that could happen?!” Étienne snapped. He was tired of the same argument and the same excuse. He couldn’t understand why the other man couldn’t be true to himself.
He hadn’t meant to sound so upset - he knew it was hard for his friend, but he hated that it had to be this way.
“You know damn well what the worst that could happen is. My career could end. I would get ridiculed, mocked, and dragged through the dirt. You don’t hear what they say - what the others say about people like me - like us.” He sat up quickly and pushed Étienne away.
“But what if you start a change? Something good? The league needs to change, damn it.”
“They’re not ready. God - who knows if they’ll ever be. I just - I can’t be like you.”
“And what the hell’s that supposed to mean?”
“Not everyone can not care like you do, Étienne. We’re not all strong - or stupid like you. I’m scared, okay?! Hitting guys on the ice is one thing, but telling your teammates you like screwing guys is - you don’t do that. Ever. Not unless you want to end your career.” He yelled.
“You should be allowed to be yourself! I love the sport, but I hate the culture.” Étienne replied angrily. “I hate what it does to you.” He added, softer, trying to pull back his friend towards him. The other man flopped back and hid his face in his hands.
“I know... look, I better go. If people see me leave from here...”
“I know, they’ll talk.” Étienne sighed.
They both remained unmoving for a minute, before Étienne finally pulled him down for a hard kiss. “I’m sorry. At least you get this. I didn’t mean to snap.”
“I know. At least I know you care.”
Étienne gave him a pointed look. “Of course.”
The man hesitated a moment longer, before he got up and gathered his clothes, dressing himself. “Well, I guess you’ll be at the game next Thursday?” He asked, a hint of worry in his voice.
“You know I’m always there.”
“Okay, good.”
He made his way to the door and Étienne watched the way his body moved under his hastily thrown on clothes. He wanted to tell the man to come back - to get a good night’s rest with him, but he didn’t.
“And you know my door will be open for you.” He said instead.
The man paused but did not turn back. Étienne saw him give a small nod of acknowledgement and that was it.
For now, it had to be enough.
