“I’m home.” Vincent announced, stepping into his childhood home.
“Hey, kiddo, good to see you.” His father came to greet him, hugging him tightly. They went through the usual trivialities, walking to the kitchen where supper was waiting for them.
“So, how’s school going?”
“Good, I guess, can’t complain, looking forward to finishing though…” Vincent admitted. His father laughed and poured him a glass of wine.
“You have a year left, you can do it.”
“Yeah, I know, c’est juste long.”/ “…it’s just long.”
“I’m sure it is. Other than that, anything new?” Vincent paused and then nodded.
“I have a new boyfriend.” He admitted and then smiled. His father smiled back. He was so grateful that he had an understanding father, who had never judged him for his sexual preferences.
“Oh? Do I have to give you the safety speech again?”
“Dad - no, you did that already.”
“Remember, safe sex is good sex.” He teased.
“Please, once was embarrassing enough.”
“Do you want me to come with you and buy condoms?” He continued, a wide grin on his face.
“Daaad, stop!” Vincent whined, beet red.
“Okay, okay, I’ll stop.”
“Plus, we just started dating.”
“And you’re telling me you haven’t slept with him yet?” Vincent opened his mouth to say something, but then closed it. His father had a point.
“As long as you’re happy and using precaution, that’s all that matters to me.”
“We are…” Vincent admitted, his face completely flushed.
“So, tell me, what’s his name, what’s he like?”
“Well, eum, he’s really nice and funny and - I have a picture on my phone, wait.”
“Ah yes, the cell phone.” Vincent ignored his father and took his phone out from his pocket. When he opened it, his father noticed the small smile that came to his lips. He knew that look.
“And something tells me you just got a message from him?”
“No - yes. Can I just answer it? It won’t be long.”
“Just this once. Then, after you show me the picture, it goes back in your pocket.”
“Yes, Papa.” He watched as his son tried to hide the smile off his face. It was cute.
“Kay, so, this is him.” Vincent handed him the phone, a moment later.
“Isn’t this from your ski trip?”
“Yes.”
“I thought you said you were going with friends.”
“I did. We were friends at the time. Though, we sorta hooked up after the trip, well, yeah…” His father noticed the blush on his cheeks and left it at that.
“He seems nice, but I still don’t know his name.”
“Oh, right! His name is Jean-Pierre. He’s in my history class. He’s really funny. I’m sure the two of you would get along.”
“Then you should invite him over, for supper, next weekend. I would love to meet him.”
“What? But we just started dating.” Vincent stammered.
“So? Let him decide whether or not he wants to come.”
“Fine.” Vincent took out his phone again and asked his boyfriend if he was free, for dinner, the following week.
“See, was that so hard?”
“Yes. If he comes, you’re not allowed to show him baby pictures.” His father mock-pouted.
“Aw, you’re no fun, those are precious.”
“And no embarrassing stories!”
“I’m a Dad; it’s my job to tell your boyfriend all the embarrassing stories.”
“No. You can show off my accomplishments, instead.”
“Sure, like the time you were potty trained. Your first day of school. When you got your driver’s license…” Vincent groaned. If Jean-Pierre could survive this supper and still want him, after all the embarrassing tales his father would no doubt tell him, he was the one.
