Music Madness? Not quite.

The second meeting of the Austin Hoopers was "Music Madness" but the only madness was me trying to get my poor broken boom box to work properly. The eight brand-new "D" size batteries I put in it that very morning only lasted through one and a half CDs.

I have been reluctant to spend cash on a digital player because I am thisclose to paying off one of my credit cards. But I can't very well hoop in silence, can I?

Randal came to the meeting again, and brought some extra hoops and poi. We were joined by two new members, Holly and Hillary. Holly brought some homemade poi she made out of white nylons and tennis balls. Those looked too heavy to try out for my first time at poi, so I borrowed Randal's set. He showed me how to hook the single leather strap of the poi on my middle two fingers in a way that reminded me of a macrame Lark's Head. (Now I wish I had ordered my poi with single straps instead of double straps!)

Not only did I not bop myself in the head, after Holly and Randal corrected my slightly pigeon-toed arcs, I did quite well. And I discovered that my "natural" poi direction is backwards. "There's nothing wrong with that," said Holly. "As in hooping, where you might prefer one direction over the other, the same thing happens in poi." So I am a backward poi-er and a wiggling left hooper. :-D

Some Hooping Terms
Right hooper - Hooper who moves the hoop clockwise around his/her body.
Left hooper - Hooper who moves the hoop counter-clockwise around his/her body.
Wiggler - Hooper who propels the hoop side-to-side, with feet parallel to each other.
Rocker - Hooper who propels the hoop front-to-back, with one foot stepped out forwards, as if they were taking a step.

(I would further break rockers down into left and right, depending on which leg is forward, but not everyone shares my intellectual joy for organizing and categorizing.)

The meeting started around 1:00 pm and didn't break up until 3:15 pm or so. An excellent workout. And if my poi do not come in before next Sunday's "Oh Boy! It's Poi!" meeting, I shall bring my juggling gear. W00t!
