A/N: We sincerely apologize that we were not able to post yesterday! Both of us were extremely, honestly, HONESTLY busy. And no, this time, busy is not a cover-up for being lazy LOL. We're also really sorry that this part is shorter than the other parts! It just so happens that it would not make sense if we cut it off at the 3k mark - ending in the middle of nowhere is no good.~
“Donghae, come,” Eunhyuk waved, smiling and beckoning for the younger male to come closer to him. He was sitting by the river near Donghae’s house with his feet in the water, fidgeting around with a colorful contraption in his hands that he had created just the other night. Donghae, who was carrying a bucket of water into the house, stopped his actions to give Eunhyuk a confused glance. The other continued to motion him over, so the brunette obeyed, placing the bucket onto the ground before approaching his now close friend.
“Yeah?” Donghae asked, and was answered with an awkward silence as Eunhyuk’s concentration was only focused on the toy he had made. The silence ended after a while, though, when the older male finally decided to get to the point.
“A close friend of mine named Hyemi once taught me how to make one of these,” Eunhyuk fondly spun the pinwheel of flowers and tree bark. As if on cue, a breeze happened to swoosh by right then, causing the gorgeous flowers to dance in a graceful manner. A smile stretched across the prince’s face as he watched the colors spin and twirl, while Donghae stood and studied the happy expression he had on him. Never had the brunette see the boy in front of him so calm and peaceful.
The quiet moment was broken after a minute or so when Eunhyuk finally decided to look up. “But this isn’t for me,” he said as he stood. “Accept it as a gift for taking care of me.”
He placed the toy into Donghae’s grip and grinned at the person in front of him. The brunette observed the item in his hands for a few moments, watching as the flowers spun in perfect synchronization with every brush of wind.
“Thanks.” They stayed there for another minute before Donghae broke the silence, cracking a smile upon his face before grabbing Eunhyuk’s hand and tugging him back in the house. “Grab your coat, Eunhyuk, we’re going to the market. Does roast pork sound okay for lunch?”
It appeared as if more than a thousand were crowded around the local marketplace that day; when the two of them arrived, there was barely enough space to take a small step. They eyed each other with confused expressions before Donghae decided to nudge the person closest to him in order to ask what this was all about. The man informed both of them with enthusiasm that the ships have returned from trade with the east and goods from the other side of the world were now in the shops. Eunhyuk’s eyes began to brighten hearing those words, and before Donghae could even blink, he was being pulled through the crowd by the older male. However, the prince was forced to follow Donghae to go purchase the pork instead.

“Okay, Hyuk, this one’s funny. So there was a man and a dog,” Donghae started his joke, not paying any attention to the other as he talked. He often laughed in the middle of his speech, causing Eunhyuk to tune out here and then. The prince groaned, wondering how Donghae was able to carry such a gigantic piece of roast pork like that and babble nonstop, without even halting to inhale some air. This was the seventh joke he was sharing and honestly, Eunhyuk didn’t really find them funny. He finally decided to tune out fully until Donghae was done, stopping in his tracks as he found himself distracted by the foreign, mystical items that he had never seen before. It was marvelous how different the craftsmanship was and Eunhyuk was amazed at the fragrant spices he had never smelled before, wondering how it would be used in a dish.
The brunette was oblivious to Eunhyuk’s actions as he continued to walk and explain his self-created riddle. It was not until many moments later when Donghae was about to finish his joke that he noticed Eunhyuk’s absence.
“So then the man told his dog-are you listening, Hyuk? This is the good part,” Donghae smiled, turning around and expecting to see his friend. However, he was met with the many busy residents of the village scurrying in the streets. “Hyuk?”
The panic didn’t come immediately; Donghae stayed calm for the first couple minutes as he studied his surroundings, searching for the voluminous patch of chocolate brown hair. It wasn’t helping though, since at least half of the people around him were brunettes, including Donghae himself. The sweat finally decided to reveal itself after that as Donghae’s forehead and neck began to grow moist until droplets were forming. His heart began to pound faster as he scrambled to the person closest to him.
“Have you seen a man about my height, about one inch taller, with brown hair and a really gummy smile?”
The woman gave Donghae a weird glance before brushing him off and continuing her market shopping. Worried, he chose to go to another villager, this time an old man.
“Excuse me, ajusshi, but have you seen a young man about one inch taller than me with brown hair?” Donghae asked with panic written all over every word he spoke. The old man coughed endlessly until finally clearing his throat one last time and replying with his raspy voice, “WHAT?”
Giving up on the old man, Donghae hurried down the streets, searching for Eunhyuk everywhere he went. He was panting heavily by the time he stopped at a random shop to catch his breath. The owner observed the young male in front of him before handing him a glass of water, which Donghae gratefully accepted. After setting the now empty glass back onto the counter, the brunette thanked the man before resuming his search.
“Eunhyuk?!” Donghae shouted his name once, attracting some disturbed glances from the local villagers. The sweat returned as the panic grew; Donghae ruffled up his hair in frustration. His hands shook as he thought of all the possibilities where Eunhyuk could be, but one in particular delivered a harsh pang to his chest: perhaps Eunhyuk left him. It was not impossible after all - now that he thought about it, he barely knew anything about the other. Where he lived, who he was…it was all unknown to him and it shouldn’t be surprising that Eunhyuk had a family to return to, people who would miss him. Donghae’s spirit sank; he bought two serving of pork, but only one could eat it and he bit his lip at the emptiness of that thought. At that moment a finger tapped his shoulder twice, scaring the brunette out of his mind. Alarmed, Donghae jumped and shifted his heels to face whoever was behind him.
“Donghae? Why is your back so wet?” Eunhyuk wrinkled his eyebrows before turning his head to the side, focusing his view on Donghae’s forehead. “Why are you sweating…? I knew the roast pork was too heavy for you to carry.”
Sighing in relief, the younger clutched his chest to calm his heavily beating heart. Then he realized that Eunhyuk just insulted him indirectly. “N-No!” he answered, frowning but at the same time avoiding direct eye contact with the other. They were almost home when the brunette heard a stop in Eunhyuk’s footsteps (yes, he was paying full attention to the other’s walking pace now). Donghae took a curious peek behind him to find the prince absorbed into some type of luxurious item displayed on one of the merchant shops. As he drew closer, he realized that this item was a fan from Ai Kiang, a kingdom far east; it was a peaceful color of sea green and had the kingdom’s letters on it, which Donghae could not read. The fan was meant to be for the wealthy, which caused the brunette to wonder why someone like Eunhyuk, who was a stranger he had met out in the woods, would want it. Just dreaming about being rich, I suppose.
“Magnificent! I’ve never seen anything like this,” Eunhyuk conversed with the merchant, who endlessly praised the kingdom for he had traveled there and guaranteed that what he sold was true to its value.
The sparkle in Eunhyuk’s eyes struck something deep within Donghae as he watched the other stare at the foreign fan in awe.
He softly smiled, tucking away all of his emotions from his eyes and asked, “Ah, a busy man like you must be tired and need a place to rest. Where will you be staying tonight?”
-
“What is this?” Eunhyuk asked Donghae two nights later. The two of them were sitting across from each other at the dinner table with their empty plates. Dinner has just ended a moment ago and Eunhyuk was about to leave to take his bath when the brunette made him stay and pulled out a slender box from his coat.
“A present,” Donghae smiled, sliding the box across the table into Eunhyuk’s hands. “Think of it as a thank you gift for giving me a thank you gift.”
“Nonsense,” Eunhyuk frowned, pushing the container back to the other male. “You’re not supposed to thank someone for thanking you. I won’t accept it.”
“Too bad, you will,” Donghae persistently slid the box to the other side. “Take it or leave my house.”
After the staring contest and sighing in defeat, the older took the box and removed the lid apathetically. However, the object inside the box caused Eunhyuk’s eyes to sparkle, just like the other day at the local market. Donghae explained how he saw Eunhyuk staring at the fan when they were at the market. He grabbed the fan from the box and excitedly opened it up before gasping.
Donghae smiled and watched the other’s happiness contently, feeling proud of himself until the following question left him choking on his own saliva.
“Wait…how did you get this?”
Donghae didn’t think the other would ask a question like that; he had simply assumed that Eunhyuk would gratefully accept the present, thank him, and it would be done.
“I…bought it,” he sheepishly smiled, rubbing the nape of his neck awkwardly as he watched Eunhyuk’s expression carefully. It distressed him how it was painfully hard to read Eunhyuk’s emotions when he didn’t want to show it and right now was definitely one of those times.
“You can’t afford this,” Eunhyuk stated, his once elastic face turning into a blank one. He folded the fan properly back in place and dropped it into the box.
Donghae would do anything to bring that smile back - “I saved up!”
“In just two days?” Eunhyuk skeptically looked at him. “Donghae, I don’t need this, return it back to the merchant - you must have created a debt on yourself, haven’t you?”
“Not in two days…” Donghae began, running his fingers through his hair, “I might not look like I have money with my tattered clothes and these dirty shoes but I do! I save up; I have a secret emergency stash for err… emergencies.”
Eunhyuk frowned and gazed at him with the saddest pair of eyes, guilt crawling up inside him. “Well then…this purchase wasn’t an emergency.” The older nudged the box towards Donghae.
Donghae quickly pushed it back. “No, I want you to have it - no buts’! Just stop thinking about it and take it! It’s the least you can do for me.” He gulped and prayed to god that Eunhyuk would believe in him. In the back of his mind, he wondered when he had cared so much about what Eunhyuk thought. It took some more staring and a conversation with the eyes (although Donghae was dying inside - if looks could kill, he would just crumble underneath that intimidating gaze) before Eunhyuk inwardly sighed. The older stood up and walked over to him, suddenly wrapping his arms around Donghae.
“Thank you,” Donghae barely heard beyond his beating heart, “I think you’re the best friend I’ve ever had.”
And when Eunhyuk flashes him a gummy smile for the first time since they’ve met, Donghae thinks that it was worth it; it was worth retrieving that fan.
“I think I shall take my slumber early.”
“Okay,” Donghae breathes.
Long after Eunhyuk has closed the door, Donghae thinks even more. A friend…that’s something he had never had in his life either, but friends don’t…don’t feel like this, he puts his hand over his chest, throat suddenly parched. It’s fine, a side of him reasons, Eunhyuk is a handsome man and there is nothing wrong with being just a little flustered by it. Donghae lies on the bed that night, unable to sleep with Eunhyuk’s touch lingering on his skin. He silently goes out to that bar again, chugging drink after drink. But there will be no women tonight.
