awkward safeway teller

I really hate it when people you don't know try to talk to you too much. Especially when it's in a situation that doesn't really warrant conversation beyond "How are you today?" Like at the grocery store.

Tonight Ryan and I went to pick up a few things for a fruit salad we're making for the 4th of July. We came up to the register with a bunch of fruit, some carrots and soy milk. The cashier than began to ramble on about how healthy our purchases were and how unlikely we would be to get heart disease because of it. The rest of the conversation proceeded about like this:

Cashier: My birthday is coming up on 7-7. I'm thinking about cutting out fatty foods. You know, as a life change.
Me: Yeah, that is probably a good idea.
Ryan: (glares at me for responding in such a rude way)
Cashier: I'm going to eat a whole rack of ribs when I get home though.
Me: Yeah, that's not as healthy as our food.
Cashier: Last week I ate $25 worth of Jack in the Box all by myself.
Me: That is impressive.
Ryan: (glares at me for continuing to encourage this conversation/surpresses laughter)

I don't understand what kind of response was appropriate in this situation! "Yeah, it's too bad you're a fat cashier at Safeway, eating a rack of ribs sure isn't going to help!" ??? Why was it necessary to have that conversation? That's why I don't talk to people.
