III. REASSURANCE

He entered the gates he despised the most, the gates that locked him and separated him from his freedom.  He never looked back and continued to walk towards the district. It never changed, people like him are still active even in daylight persuading potential customers for the night. His world is completely different from Ohno and he can’t involve the innocent man in this dirty place.

Before he goes back to the teahouse, he passed by the theatre. He wanted to know if he’s still included for the next play or his boss decided to replace him.

“Nino! Nino!” he turned towards the direction of the voice shouting his name.

“Toma”

“Nino, you know you made our production worried. The play would start next month and yet we haven’t done anything because our lead actor is missing. They said you run away. Is that true Nino?”

He doesn’t know what to answer and he knew Toma realized that he would not say anything about his disappearance.

“Nino”

He looked at Toma’s serious face, afraid of what Toma was about to say. But when he saw the worried face on his face, he felt guilty being the reason of his friends’ anxiousness.

“You should stop living in that place. The theater can accommodate you now, heck since three years ago. Why won’t you leave the brothel?” Toma cried.

He couldn’t tell Toma about it because he doesn’t want him to get disappointed with him.

“You still won’t tell me…”

“Sorry” he said as he look directly at Toma’s pained face.

After his encounter with Toma as the man reluctantly let him go, he went to his boss. The boss forgave him as he was a kind man that Nino adored unlike the previous owner of the theatre that would surely punish him physically. Similar with Toma, the boss also asked him to live in the theatre and as usual he declined. “You’re always welcome here, Nino” the boss said before he left. He was once tempted to accept the offer but he can’t, he wouldn’t.  He promised to himself that he will never leave Masaki and Jun because they are the most important people in his life… because they are the only family he has.

-----------------------------------------

Aiba came running going to the direction where the commotion is, a runaway courtesan has returned. There he saw Nino, calm and collected like he didn’t do something against the rules. His face is blank as he heard murmurs and whispers even though “Nino” is what he could decipher on their hushed voices.

He grabbed Nino’s hand and led him to the front door.

“Where are you going Masaki?” the voice sent shivers to his skin.

It’s not the first time he heard Jun voice like this cold but he’s scared of it. His urge to protect Nino got stronger, he doesn’t want Jun to hurt Nino. He stopped his steps and brought Nino to him, embracing him tight.

“Masaki go back to your room. Nino, come with me.” Jun demanded.

“No!” He cried off. “Jun-kun, please there’s still a chance for him to escape. Help him!” He pleaded but the look on Jun’s face made his fright twice as before.

“Masaki, I’ll be fine. Go back to your room” Nino said reassuringly.

------------------------------------

“The boss would come later this evening, I hope you aware of the consequences of your action” Jun said impassively.

But Jun wouldn’t be able to deceive him; he knows that no matter how strong Jun acts, he’s the frailest among them.

“I am, I never regret anything… even coming back here. You shouldn’t have raised your voice at Masaki, he would act uncomfortable around you from now on.”

He saw Jun flinched. He knows that he’s guilty and regretful on how he acted towards Masaki earlier. He would not blame the other man for he knows Masaki would be punish if he continued what he’s planning earlier.

“I would apologize to him later because he’s right, you should… have not come back. You should have run away from this place” Jun’s voice broke.

Seeing the old Jun back, Nino can’t help but smile, Jun is indeed the youngest among them. He can still feel the innocence on Jun’s sentiments. This little innocence that they still have, he wanted to protect it so he decided to return.

“I won’t leave you guys behind” he said.

Jun stopped walking, releasing his hold in his arm. He turned to look at him with the same look Masaki had earlier.

“We know, we always know that you’ll come back to us” Jun said softly. “I’m sorry Nino for keeping you in this place”

But before he can reply, they were interrupted by the boss’s assistant.

“Nino, the boss is calling for you”

------------------------------------

“Oh Nino-chan, you’re as pretty as you always are”
Nino shivered. He hates that voice and the look plastered on the boss face.
“Come here”

He obeyed and came closer to the boss. The boss ran his fingers on Nino’s exposed skin and slowly removed his yukata.

“We should check every part of your body. We can’t have any damage on our merchandise”

He just let the man to do what he wanted because he has no right to resist. This is how low the person that he is, that’s why it is one of the reason he cannot be with Ohno, the man is untainted and being with him will only give the man misery and troubles.

------------------------------------

“Why did you come back?” Masaki cried.

They were in the bath cleaning Nino’s bruised body. He can see the rope lines from Nino’s wrists, kiss marks all over his body and the swollen whipped bruises on his body. Even though it looks really painful from the way Nino flinches every time he cleaned those bruises, he never heard Nino complained.

“I don’t have somewhere to return to. My mother isn’t there anymore”

“You could just hide and go to the other town; I know you brought your money you earned from the theater.”

Masaki knew that Nino pays the brothel the money he earned from acting in the theater but he also knew that Nino kept the tips he got from some of his audience in the theater. Though the tips are not that high it could still make a good profit for him to runaway.

“Masaki, it’s always been my dream to act. I can’t leave the theater”

“Then leave this place… you don’t belong here. I might get lonely without you here but I want you to be happy, Nino”

“Masaki, it’s the theater that sold him here. If he leaves this place, he might as well quit being an actor”

“Then find another theatre!”

“It’s not that simple. A theater is for the public and everyone could come and see it. If I act in a different theater, they would find me and take me away from there” Nino lied for he knows that the people from the theater would never do that.

“Maa-chan, you wanted me to be happy right?” Nino asked but Masaki knows that he’s not waiting for anything answer. It’s a way of Nino reassuring him of something that all his worries would vanish.

“I’m happy, staying here with you and Jun” Even though Nino said it sincerely, Masaki didn’t miss the longing he saw on Nino’s face.
