Manga reviews

May 30, 2008 16:54

I’m now starting to lose interest watching the anime version of Vampire Knight. Well, yeah, I like the whole concept of making it in an anime version because I’m a person who would rather watch than to read the manga version. However, when I started reading the manga version, my god, what fortunate thing happened. The whole manga reading I made this week was awesome. The concept of the story (in the manga version) is well written and the drawings are neater and finer. Sometimes, Yuuki’s eyes in the anime version are so huge and her hair is not so good unlike the manga. I’m totally boycotting this anime series, although one of the reasons watching Vampire Knight anime version is to hear Mamoru Miyano’s voice (he is the seiyuu of my favorite character, Kiryuu Zero). I really can’t wait for the next chapter of Vampire Knight. Every page is worth wasting your time in the internet. I’m actually planning to buy the manga because Comic Odyssey can re-order issues from Japan for 550php (they lower it because the original price is 600php before). Going to ask my mom about it first because I’m saving money to buy Ouran Koukou Hostabu manga (volume 01 to latest), Fruits Basket (volume 01-20), The WallFlower (volume 01 except 02 to latest) and Shiawase Kissa Sanchoume (volume 01 to latest). I wonder where I can find money because each manga volume cost 550php. LOL.

Okay, I’m going to have manga reviews under the cut so users, beware of long essays and insights, heavy images (I’ll resize it, I promise) and lots of fangirling. I don’t read shounen because I find them awfully boring.

Note: This will be re-edit unless the beast inside me will go, fangirl again. :D And if you want to recommend me some mangas you've loved since the first day you read it, please do so. I want more manga reading in my remaining days since school will start in less than two weeks. Poor me. :DDD

Title: Vampire Knight
Genre: horror, romance, school life, shoujo, supernatural
Read it: online
Rating: 8/10
Summary: Yuuki's earliest memory is of a stormy winter night filled with blood, when she was attacked by a vampire - then saved by another. Ten years later, Yuuki Cross, the adopted daughter of the Headmaster of Cross Academy, has become the guardian of the vampire race. She protects her savior, Kaname Kuran, from discovery as he leads a group of vampires at the elite boarding school. At her side is Zero Kiryu; a childhood friend whose hatred for the creatures that destroyed everything he held dear makes him determined never to trust them. This co-existing arrangement seems to be working - but have the vampires truly renounced their murderous ways? Or is there a darker truth behind their actions?

Thoughts: I first heard this only this year but I have been seeing lots of scanlation groups, scanning this manga. My first impression when I first read the manga, I was curious why Vampire Knight when the protagonist itself is the vampire? So, I didn’t stop ranting and I found the answer in the latest chapters of the manga (chapter 37 to latest chapters). I loved Hino Matsuri drew the characters, especially Yuuki Cross and Kiryuu Zero (what can I say; I’m a proud believer that Yuuki and Zero will end up together in the series). The manga itself screams to be read. They also released the anime version of Vampire Knight, which I’m totally boycotting from now on. :| And there's 101% possibility that Zero will end up with Yuuki (I rely too much in my instinct but this time, I believe!).

Title: Beast Master
Genre: comedy, romance, school life, shoujo
Read it: online
Rating: 9/10
Summary: Yuiko Kubozuka is a high school girl who loves animals. Unfortunately, animals hate her and flee from her whenever possible. So when a new classmate, Leo Aoi, turns out to be a scary guy who resembles a wild animal than anything human, she is intrigued. Not only because Leo has an affinity with animals which she envies, but also because he isn’t the wild animal that he seems to be. He seems to hide a very sweet disposition behind his scary features. Or so she thought. The truth is revealed when they are attacked and Leo immediately behaves like a wild animal and gets violent like a blood-thirsty animal, just to save Yuiko. Will Yuiko be able to tame this wildest of all animals or will he be just like the others and flee from her? Or the better question, will she flee from him?

Thoughts: The first thing that came out of my mind when I saw the two main characters, namely Yuiko and Leo - it’s a perfect story. Leo reminded me so much of my favorite male character of all time, L Lawliet of Death Note although Leo's  eyes are cuter. The flow of the story is extraordinary and I’m amazed whenever Leo loses control and Yuiko will come to tame him. He’s a beast with a good attitude. Well, all of us hold a beast inside whenever we feel different, right?

Title: Lovely Complex / Love Com
Genre: comedy, drama, romance, school life, shoujo, sports
Read it: online
Rating: 10/10
Summary: Koizumi Risa, current height 170 cm. Her surname is translated to "Small River". A girl taller than most other girls her age. Otani Atsushi, current height 156 cm. His surname is translated to "big valley". A guy way below the average height of a high school boy. They're both known around school as the comedic duo looking funny together. Due to this fact, they've been on one another's bad side ever since they first met. One day, a new transfer student shows up and he happens to be very tall! Koizumi immediately gets interested in this boy and Otani suddenly proposes a silly idea to Koizumi. The idea is that they are to help each other out to get their respective love interests by all means! Koizumi undoubtedly agrees to this but as in all other shoujo manga, things never turn out the way people want it to.

Thoughts: NO WORDS CAN DESCRIBE HOW BEAUTIFUL THE MANGA IS. I love it, it’s included in my top three favorite manga. The concept, the characters, the seiyuus and the music - it blends perfectly together. And to think that I’m also a very tall girl (I’m almost 5 foot and 9 inches tall although I’m only 15) and I’m in love with a short guy. The storyline really made me go, “WOW, this is perfect!” I love it, every page is worth reading and it’s very hilarious!

Title: Oresama Ouji
Genre: romance, shoujo
Read it: online
Rating: 8/10
Summary: Sawa hates Judo. She was once really good at it, but boys always rejected her because she was so strong. Now she's entering high school and the gorgeous captain of the Judo club has selected Sawa (against her will) to be the club manager! He also claims he knows her from the past... How will Sawa deal with managing the sport she hates most, especially since the captain seems to like her!?

Thoughts: While I was searching for something to read, I saw Oresame Ouji, lying in one of the pages of MangaFox.com. I love the storyline although it’s kind of cheesy. MangaFox.com haven’t updated the series but it’s worth wasting your time. Plus, the guy there is a total cutie!

Title: Ouran High School Host Club
Genre: comedy, drama, gender bender, romance, school life, shoujo
Read it: online
Rating: 10/10
Summary: Haruhi Fujioka is a scholarship student at Ouran High School, a fictional school located in Bunkyo, Tokyo. Because of the superlative cost of the school uniform, Haruhi resorts to wearing long slacks, polo shirts and a vest. Combined with her large glasses and tousled short hair, Haruhi's look causes her to be confused for a boy. Looking for a quiet place to study, Haruhi stumbles upon the Third Music Room, the working place of the Ouran Host Club, a group of six attractive male students (Takashi "Mori", Mitsukuni "Honey", Kaoru and Hikaru, Tamaki, and Kyouya) who spend their time charming and entertaining the school's girls for profit. During their first meeting, Haruhi accidentally knocks over a vase valued at ¥8,000,000, estimated to be $80,000. In order to pay off the large debt, Haruhi is employed as the club's "dog" and constantly ordered to do menial tasks like serving food or cleaning up. The Club president, without knowing she is really a girl, promotes Haruhi to "host" as soon as he discovers her potential. Even after the truth comes out in the Club, Haruhi continues the charade and is allowed to pay off the rest of her debt working as a host; provided she conceals her true identity/gender from the customers.

Thoughts: NO WORDS CAN ALSO DESCRIBE HOW HILARIOUS THE MANGA IS. This is my favorite, the number one on my top three favorite manga. Just by seeing Tamaki and the twins makes me want to roll on the floor, laughing my heart out with tears on my eyes! And the anime adaptation made me so happy that I repeatedly watched it for a hundred times. If you want to laugh, to be happy, to fall in love and search for what life is what about, Ouran Koukou Hostabu will never let you down. Hatori Bisco really hit the jackpot!

Title: Kaichou wa Maid-sama!
Genre: comedy, romance, school life, shoujo, slice of life
Read it: online
Rating: 9/10
Summary: Ayuzawa Misaki is the student council president of the former all-boy school, Seika High School. In order to protect the girls, she battles the boys everyday. On the other hand, she secretly works at a "Maid Cafe". But a popular boy from school, Usui Takumi, found out! Living in between the double identity of a Maid and a student council president~ What should we do Goshujin-sama!? Has Riiko died and gone to heaven? The cute guy turns out to be sweet, smart, a great cook, and lots more. And he looks like a million bucks, which is what he's going to cost Riiko if she doesn't return him in time...

Thoughts: it’s hilarious, it’s cute and it makes me want to smile whenever I read things manga. I found this at MangaFox.com while I was looking for something to read. Usui and Misaki makes a strong pair of couples and I liked it when Usui jumped off the building just to get the picture Misaki told him to keep (spoiler!). Misaki haven’t yet told Usui whether she likes him or not but my instincts tells me she likes Usui so much.

Title: Shiawase Kissa Sanchoume
Genre: comedy, romance, shoujo
Read it: online
Rating: 9/10
Summary: Uru is a very short girl and is constantly mistaken for an elementary school kid, but despite that, she is ridiculously strong and decides to live by herself after her mother gets remarried. She ends up working at a small cafe with two rather unique co-workers, Shindou, who acts gruff and intimidating, but who is really a nice guy who loves to make cakes and pies and the like, and Ichirou, who is really good-looking but who instantly falls asleep when he gets hungry and
doesn't wake up again until he's force-fed something? What will the future bring to them?

Thoughts: This is the funniest, next to Lovely Complex (Ouran is my TOP one most funniest). I just don’t know but when I started reading it, the story gets more and more interesting, especially whenever Shindou blushes and can’t say what he really feels whenever he’s talking to Uru. And enter Ichirou, who crashes whenever he’s hungry. Ichirou and Uru looks like brother and sister. I LOVE THIS MANGA. It’s one of the best and no words can also describe how I love this manga. Caps Lock can’t scream my fangirling.

Title: Wallflower
Genre: comedy, drama, romance, school life, shoujo
Read it: online
Rating: 9/10
Summary: It's a gorgeous, spacious mansion, and four handsome, fifteen-year-old friends are allowed to live in it for free! There's only one condition that within three years the guys must transform the owner's wallflower niece into a lady befitting the palace in which they all live! How hard can it be? Enter Sunako Nakahara, the agoraphobic, horror-movie-loving, pockmark-faced, frizzy-haired, fashion-illiterate recluse who tends to break into explosive nosebleeds whenever she sees anyone attractive. This project is going to take more than our four heroes ever expected: it needs a miracle!

Thoughts: Probably one of the stupidest and funniest manga I’ve ever read. With the four guys, which stands like F4 for me, in the scene and Sunako on the side, it makes a great manga. The anime adaptation (I watched the trailer and it made me laugh very hard) is also awesome. The four guys really look good together and Sunako is very pretty although she prefers wearing a hat and stays inside her scary room. I love her skeletons (Josephine, haha!).

Title: 24 Colors - Hatsukoi no Palette
Genre: comedy, romance, school life, shoujo, slice of life
Read it: online
Rating: 8/10
Summary: Nanaka loves to paint. So when she enters high school, she gets excited at the prospect of joining the arts club. However, there's only two members-- the mysterious Chihaya and the energetic Kento. They're both good-looking guys, and Chihaya shares Nanaka's love for painting! Alongside the two gorgeous guys (and Nanaka's best friend)...what will happen?

Thoughts: it made me go, “KKKYYYAAA!” when I first read chapter 01. I don’t know, maybe because Chihaya is cute and he drew a flower on Nanaka’s shirt. The drawing is gorgeous and the fact the story revolves around arts and falling in love. It took two months for MangaFox.com to update the manga and it’s still ongoing.

Title: 7th Period is a Secret.
Genre: romance, school life, shoujo
Read it: online
Rating: 8/10
Summary: Shun is a girl who used to be shy and gloomy. Wanting to change, she transforms herself into a bright girl when her family transfers into a new place. Hoping to fit in, she laughs and smile at everything agreeing with everyone. She starts to fear that her young teacher is seeing right through her. Is she just imagining, or is it true---?

Thoughts: I don’t really like a story that revolves around teacher-student relationship but this manga changed my impression. Maybe because Shun and her teacher were both young and that they both love each other. The ending is quite a cliffhanger, especially when Shun said that, “It’s the start of the 7th period.” I wonder if they really end up together since Shun isn’t a graduating student at that time. But the manga is very good.

Title: Sweet 16
Genre: comedy, one shot, romance, shoujo
Read it: online
Rating: 8/10
Summary: "I made a promise with my most favorite person in the world, while watching only the sea." Kataoka Nanami had made a promise with her childhood friend, Eiji that once she celebrates her sweet sixteen, they are to marry. However, nowadays Eiji only seems to be interested in surfing and has seem to forgotten all about the promise. Will Nanami be able to revive her childhood promise?

Thoughts: this manga might have reached the rating of 9 if Nanami’s eyes aren’t so huge and that she’s not too childish. The ending is very sweet (like the title), because Eiji had to sneak out of the hospital just to celebrate Nanami’s sixteenth birthday. I wonder if I’ll have a boyfriend at the age of sixteen and will also celebrate it greatly. XD

Title: Koukou Debut

Genre: comedy, drama, romance, school life, shoujo
Read it: online
Rating: 10/10
Summary: Haruna Nagashima gave her all to softball in middle school, and now that she's made her high school debut she's decided to give her all for a new goal. Getting a boyfriend and falling in love! However, she has one small problem. Since she never paid any attention to fashion or trend in middle school she has no idea how to go about attracting her yet-to-be-found love. But a chance encounter with with Yoh Komiyama provides her with the opportunity she needs. If he coaches her in how to become attractive, surely she can find herself a boyfriend!

Thoughts: I saw this from
rainwash manga reviews and I tried to read it. As expected, NO WORDS CAN DESCRIBE HOW MUCH I LOVE THIS MANGA. First chapter blew my mind like hell, it was so awesome. Yoh reminded me so much of Shindou of Shiawase Kissa Sanchoume, although Yoh is a lot more handsome. I love it. It makes me want not to give up when it comes to liking someone. I'm going to read this, it's so brilliant!

That's enough for fangirling for now. Off to read my latest crave, Koukou Debut, will add it here tomorrow 'cause I'm tired of typing now and I'll add the image of Oresama Ouji tomorrow also... I want to read it now. :DDD
