blackout

There was a city-wide blackout yesterday, in all of San Diego.

The whole thing was crazy: My four o'clock class was cancelled and thirty minutes later this loud booming sound echoed throughout the area, followed by a clear disembodied voice stating that the campus was shutting down and to evacuate in an orderly fashion.

It took me over two hours to get home--at least an hour was stuck in my car, at the top floor of the campus parking structure, with everybody in line to get out. I drew this in my car while we were at a stand-still:

I didn't realize what a city-wide blackout meant until I got out to the roads and realized every single stoplight had gone out. Even the freeway was moving at glacial speeds. When I finally got out of it I stopped by a friends house to help salvage the melting contents of her freezer. There were so many families I saw walking around with their kids and dogs, or playing ball. It's like the kind of neighborhood you only see in movies.

By the time I got home, it seemed like everyone had been preparing for war times, collecting water, candles, matches.

At night I played with the candles and wax. My mini dalek keychain helped tremendously as a flashlight, which I later messed around with it and the camera, though it's hard to make creative light streaks when you're on your own.

The power was fixed come morning., though we are going through some water limitations at the moment. Otherwise, still hanging out by my computer and television!
