Two more points in the falsity of "the city that never sleeps." We left the hotel around 10am, and nothing was open. Nothing. Some stores opened at 11, some at noon, some not at all. Then we went for dinner around 7:30. Some people came in at 8 and were told the kitchen was closed. The place shut down completely at 8:30. A restaurant. What?
Today, we walked so much. In the morning, we walked up to Central Park. It's much more jungly than I imagined. Very pretty, trees everywhere. We found the stretch of the park that the Happening starts in, which was cool. There was horse drawn carriages around, we saw a little carnival, a chess arena, a million people from the NY Triathlon (including dogs from the 'dog NY Triathlon) We wandered around some more, looking for shopping. We ran into Trump Tower, so we popped in for a visit. We also walked by Rockefeller Center. After that, we braved the subway and because of my ultra-metro skills, got down to Ground Zero. We took a look at the new construction then hit the WTC Museum. They had personal items recovered from the wreckage, pieces of the planes, firemen's uniforms. All in all, pretty depressing. Though once you've been to Auschwitz, nothing else really compares.
From Ground Zero, we walked down to Wall Street. It's Sunday, so it was pretty quiet. We wandered down to the river and saw Brooklyn Bridge, then headed back. We had dinner at the early-closing restaurant, and then it was back to brave Times Square once more. We hit Ripley's Believe it or Not, which was awesome and weird and wonderful. And then dragged ourselves back to the hotel.
On the menu tomorrow: Yankee stadium tour, Northern part of Central Park, the American Museum of Natural History, and our first Yankees/Twins game.
