... I wrote a 3D tutorial about "Depth of Field" and it's use in 3D here: http://ngb2k.livejournal.com/863288.html it refers in parts to the effect of the diaphragm.
Basically an opened diaphragm (small value of the diaphragm ring of the camera lense) means alot of light falls into the camera, what means a short exposure time but a very short depth of field(only a small distance of the image is focused). A very small diaphragm opening(high value of the diaphragm ring of the camera lense) means less light is falling into the camera, what means a long exposure time but a very large depth of field(nearly everything is focused).
What you will probably need is an light(exposure)-meter who calculates the diaphragm opening value in relation to the exposure time in relation to the sensitivty of the film. You should find them in shops for old and used cameras. Without one it's alot of guessing work to find the right exposure times.
A small addendum,..ngb2kJanuary 23 2009, 14:20:11 UTC
... one atvantage that you have with a regular camera, in opposit to the digital camera, is the posibility to have extreme long exposure times at night. To get use of the so called photographic "schwarzschild" effect at colour photos. When you photograph outdoors in the evening. The colour of the image will turn at a long exposure times(a few seconds till up to minutes) into blue or violet tones. While indoor lighting will look yellow or orange(even when it appears to your eyes as nearly white). :)
