Body tense as a wire, Hei stood there in the middle of the street.

The rain poured, drenching him and soaking him to the bone. His visibility in this weather was already compromised, and it didn’t help that the contractor he faced had the power of invisibility to aid him. The soft shaaa of the rain made it difficult to listen for footsteps, the rustle of leaves, or the breaking of a twig.

Rain never did work quite as well as a body of water, but given the circumstances, Hei saw no reason to not give it a shot. His eyes glowed red-an eerie blue glow surrounded his body-and then the air crackled, electricity jumping from drop to drop of water.

Nothing.

Hei straightened, letting his hands fall to his sides. Had the other contractor fled? It was then that he saw a flash of color out of the corner of his eye-Hei twisted, narrowly missing the throwing knife sailed past his shoulder. He whirled, throwing a hand down on the ground, and once again, electricity zipped across the soaked ground.

There was a loud rustle from a cluster of bushes, as if someone had tried to flee through them. Hei pulled on one his wires, shooting it out toward a tree, and then allowed himself to be pulled toward it, sailing through the air.

He released the wire and then tumbled, rolling to his feet in one smooth motion. Again, he sent out another jolt of electricity, and this time he was rewarded with a yelp.

Five feet away, a man materialized. His suit was soaked, his hair plastered to his pale face. The man’s eyes were wide-almost all pupil with just a thin ring of blue. Hei recognized that look: fear.

Contractors were logical, not emotionless, even if that was how they came across most of the time. And in truth, at this point in time, it was logical to show fear.

The man’s chest was heaving, and as he saw Hei approach, he tried to scramble away. Hei’s pace was slow. The other had likely exhausted his power-the craving to perform obeisance was likely gnawing at their insides. Just as the other was about to disappear across the street, Hei threw out another wire, his movements almost lazy in nature.

It looped around the contractor’s throat, and Hei watched as the man fell backwards and scrabbled at his throat. He gave it another yank, earning him a gurgle, before coming up next to the other.

“Who sent you?” he murmured, voice just barely loud enough to hear over the rain.

“Syn…” The man writhed on the ground; Hei watched impassively. “…Syndicate!”

A frown curled Hei’s lips. He knew that this would happen, knew that this is what his choice entailed. Fingers tightening around the wire in his hands, he sent a lethal dose of electricity coursing through it and watched as the man’s body jerked and twitched, eyes bulging and mouth agape.

Hei then stood, retracting the wire before turning to his left. Yin stood there quietly under an overhang. She popped open her umbrella and walked over, taking the hand that Hei extended toward her.

The rain continued to pour.
