The monsters you are referring to are called decapod crustaceans, more commonly known as crabs. They are a part of the order of Decapoda. The former allotment of their name originates from the Greek word meaning "ten legs", a reference to the five pairs of thoracic legs each possesses. They normally reside in warm, tropical waters but in this case, I believe it is safe to assume that these creatures are deviant from the ones that most humans normally consume.

I would be willing to provide a more thorough analysis, if that is your request.
