Went to Lyon last weekend. Ended up taking the plane instead of the TGV. Air France seemed like good value at €129, but that was before the reality of long delays in Paris Orly and poor food on board. Ah well. I got into Lyon at about 11:30pm, and only sat down to dinner with friends at midnight. The weekend was excellent from that point onwards. Lots of drinking, merriment and not getting to sleep until after the sun came up.
Other highlights included learning to play darts (badly; apparently I move my upper body too much), meeting the coolest two Americans ever, seeing the city on foot, the fantastic light installations for the Fête des Lumières (see photo below and also
here - never let it be said that the French municipal authorities don't make an effort) and eating tripe. The last one was surprisingly not that disgusting, although I don't think I realised what I was doing until I was reminded the next morning.
All in all, a brilliant weekend.
